Torremolinos is the first resort west of Málaga airport and the first on the Costa del Sol to be developed for tourism: its first luxury hotel, the Pez Espada, opened in 1959, yet the town only became a municipality in its own right on 27 September 1988, when it separated from Málaga. Today 71,329 people live along its seven kilometres of coast, from Los Álamos and Playamar in the east to Bajondillo below the old centre and La Carihuela in the west. Which part of Torremolinos suits a booking
The centre is built around the pedestrianised Calle San Miguel and La Nogalera, a complex of bars and shops that dates from 1963, with the Bajondillo beach below the old centre and the Torre de los Molinos, a tower from around 1300 that gave the town its name. Stay here and dinner, a drink and the walk back need no taxi. La Carihuela, the old fishing quarter to the west, is the seafood end of town, with a long run of beachfront restaurants and mid-range and boutique hotels a short walk from the sand. To the east, Playamar and Los Álamos have long beaches with apartment blocks and large resorts behind them.
Wherever you stay, the address matters more than the district. Apartment blocks rarely have a reception, so send the building name, the door number and a map pin, plus any code for the street door.

The classic evening starts with grilled fish on the seafront in La Carihuela and moves to the bars of La Nogalera, the heart of a gay scene that dates back to 1962, when Spain's first gay bar opened in the town. The crowd is mixed and the dress code relaxed, which is the town's appeal: you get a lively night without a door policy. Calle San Miguel stays busy into the evening, and by day the Molino de Inca botanical garden, with more than 150 species of palm, makes a slow afternoon before dinner.
When you want Puerto Banús for one big night, it is 40 to 45 minutes west, and a companion booked for an overnight travels with you.
