Every summer a few clients ask us to have a companion waiting when their helicopter lands, and the same three questions always come first: where does it leave from, where can it land, and will the bags fit? How Long Is the Flight From Málaga Airport to Marbella?

Málaga airport is 39 kilometres from central Marbella and 46 from Puerto Banús in a straight line, so a light helicopter covers it in 12 to 15 minutes. By road the same trip is 56 kilometres, about 50 minutes in free-flowing traffic and well over an hour on a summer Friday evening.

Air Time Versus Door to Door

The airborne part is the easy number. Add the drive from your arrival gate to the general aviation terminal, the safety briefing and loading, then whatever happens between the pad and your front door. In our experience, landing on a usable pad at the villa makes the whole trip about 40 minutes from the aircraft door at Málaga. Landing somewhere that still needs a car brings it closer to an hour. When the Saving Is Real

The road is the variable, not the flight. Puerto Banús is 63.5 kilometres from the terminal by road, and the AP-7 toll from Málaga to Marbella costs €5.70 in 2026, or €9.25 from June to September. On an August Friday the free A-7 through Fuengirola can double the journey. A helicopter turns that uncertain hour into a predictable quarter of one. Predictability, rather than raw speed, is what most of our clients are paying for when they book one.

Where Do Helicopters Leave From at Málaga Airport?

Charter helicopters board at the general aviation terminal, not Terminal 3. Aena's history of the airport describes it as the old 1940s passenger building, restored from 1995 for private and business flights. Handling there is compulsory, so your operator books an FBO such as Sky Valet, which staffs the building around the clock.

The General Aviation Terminal

Jetex lists its Málaga FBO at the Terminal de Aviación General on the Carretera del Aeroclub, and Universal Aviation also handles private flights here, saying passengers and crew are usually in and out within 10 to 15 minutes. The calm is the point. Málaga handled 26,760,549 passengers and 186,990 aircraft movements in 2025, according to Aena's figures for the airport, and almost none of that crowd passes through this building. Your car stops at the door and a handler walks you to the aircraft.

Arriving on a Scheduled Flight First

Land on easyJet or British Airways and you clear passport control and baggage reclaim in Terminal 3 like everyone else, then take a car round to the general aviation side. Allow 30 to 45 minutes between touchdown and lift-off, more for a first entry under the EU's Entry/Exit System. Arriving by Private Jet

This is where a helicopter makes most sense, because you never enter the main terminal. The jet parks on the general aviation apron, immigration happens in the same building, and the helicopter can wait a short walk away. With one handler managing both movements, the change of aircraft can take under 20 minutes. Where Can a Helicopter Land in Marbella?

Only where the operator has permission and has checked the site itself. In practice that means private pads: La Zagaleta built a helipad for residents' private arrivals, and a few villas and estates in the hills have their own. A lawn, a beach or a hotel car park is not a landing site, however large it looks.

La Zagaleta and the Estate Pads

La Zagaleta's own history page lists the helipad among the facilities planned when investors bought the 900-hectare La Baraka estate in 1990, alongside the golf courses and the equestrian centre. By road it is close to an hour from Málaga airport, the last part a climb through Benahavís, while the flight covers about 50 kilometres, so this is the clearest case on the coast for flying. Villa Pads: Ask Before You Book

Rental listings sometimes mention a helipad; treat that as a question, not a fact. Before agreeing to land, an operator wants the exact coordinates, photographs of the approach, the obstacles around it, from power lines to trees and pool fences, and the owner's written consent. Commercial flights under EU Regulation 965/2012 must also allow for a safe landing if an engine fails, which rules out some tight hillside sites for single-engine machines. If the pad fails any test, you land elsewhere and finish by car.

What Does a Helicopter Transfer Cost in 2026?

Operators quoted our clients roughly €1,500 to €3,000 per aircraft one way in 2026 for a light single-engine helicopter with four or five seats. Twin-engine machines cost considerably more. The price is per aircraft, not per seat, and it moves with positioning, waiting time, handling and the landing site.

Per Aircraft, Not Per Seat

A scheduled route shows the economics best. Hélity's timetable sells a seat from Málaga to Ceuta, a 30-minute flight in a 15-passenger AW139, for €215 one way. Charter a helicopter for yourself and you pay for every seat plus the empty flight back to base. Four people sharing a €2,000 light helicopter pay €500 each, not far off that scheduled fare; one person pays the full €2,000 for the same quarter of an hour.

What Moves the Quote

Positioning is the biggest variable: if the aircraft is based away from Málaga, you pay for the flight that brings it to you. Waiting time matters when inbound flights run late, so ask what an hour on the ground costs before you sign. Handling at the general aviation terminal is billed by the FBO. Private pads may charge a landing fee. And ask whether the quote covers flying after sunset, because some operators fly their light single-engine aircraft by day only.

How Much Luggage Can You Take on a Helicopter?

Less than you expect. Hélity, which flies 15-seat AW139s from Málaga airport, allows one case of up to 69 × 45 × 30 centimetres and 15 kilograms per passenger, hand luggage included. A light four-seat charter has a smaller hold, so plan on one soft bag each and send the rest by road.

The Published Limits

Hélity's rules are the most detailed in the region because it runs a scheduled service. Hand luggage of up to 55 × 35 × 25 centimetres and 10 kilograms goes in the hold, not the cabin, so only a handbag or a small document case stays on your lap. Every kilo above 15 costs €10, and carrying 20 kilograms needs 24 hours' notice. Charter operators work to the same physics with less space, and on light helicopters they ask for each passenger's weight as well as the bags'.

Golf Bags, Hard Cases and the Second Car

Hard-shell cases do not flex into a helicopter hold, and a golf bag can take a seat on a four-seat machine. The arrangement we set up most often is a car for the luggage and the helicopter for the people: a pre-booked saloon from Málaga airport costs about €74–€85 in 2026, or from €140 for a V-Class van, and the bags reach the villa roughly half an hour after you do. Pack the first evening's clothes in a small soft bag that flies with you.

Will the Weather Ground the Flight?

Occasionally. AEMET's 1981–2010 normals for Málaga airport show 2,905 hours of sunshine a year, but also 10.4 days of fog, 13.4 of thunderstorms and 42.3 with at least a millimetre of rain. These transfers fly by sight, so the pilot makes the call on the day, sometimes an hour before departure.

What the AEMET Normals Show

The pattern is seasonal. Rain days peak at 6.6 in December and fall to 0.1 in July, according to AEMET's climate normals for Málaga airport. Fog days peak in October (1.4) and March (1.3), and most thunderstorm days fall between September and January. July, with 347 hours of sun, is the most reliable flying month. From November to February, keep the helicopter for settled forecasts and expect the pilot to cancel early when the outlook is doubtful.

Keep a Car on Standby

For any arrival that cannot slip, such as a wedding, a dinner reservation or a first evening with a companion, book a car as well and cancel it once the helicopter is confirmed. Ask the operator in writing what happens to your money if they cancel for weather, because terms differ. Who Can Legally Fly You? Operators and Paperwork

Only a company holding an air operator certificate for commercial air transport, issued under EU Regulation 965/2012 and overseen in Spain by AESA, the state aviation safety agency. A private owner who takes money to fly you is operating outside the rules, and his insurance may not cover it. Ask for the operator's legal name and certificate before paying.

Check the Certificate, Not the Website

Many sites selling helicopter flights are brokers, which is fine as long as they name the company that actually flies. Hélity is a useful reference: an airline founded in 2016 and based at the Ceuta heliport, flying AgustaWestland AW139s for up to 15 passengers on scheduled routes from Málaga and Algeciras, and selling private charters on request. Whoever you use, ask for the aircraft type and registration, the operator's certificate number, and whether the quote includes handling, waiting time and the landing site.

The Manifest and Who Sits Where

Every passenger goes on a manifest before departure with a full name and an identity document, and the pilot assigns seats by weight, not by preference. If a companion is flying with you, we send the operator her details when the booking is confirmed, and she brings the same passport or ID card she would show at a hotel. Children, pets and anything on the dangerous goods list, from spare lithium batteries to aerosols and lighters, have to be declared in advance.

Landing to Meet a Companion: How We Time It

We schedule the companion around the landing, not the take-off. For a villa or estate pad she arrives 30 to 45 minutes after you touch down, once the bags and the house staff have settled; for a hotel, she meets you after check-in. If she flies with you, we confirm her details with the operator.

Waiting at the Villa or the Hotel

Most helicopter arrivals we handle end at a villa in the hills, so our Benahavís escorts are the companions we brief most often for them; Benahavís is outside Marbella, so the minimum is two hours, plus her taxi. Send the landing time and the pad's location, and we hold her until you confirm you are on the ground. A dinner date of three hours or more starts at €900, and an overnight of 10 to 12 hours is €3,000–€4,000 depending on the companion, which suits a late landing better.

Flying In Together

When the flight is part of the occasion, she can board with you at Málaga, or join you from your departure city on a travel companion booking at €5,000 a day or €6,000 for 48 hours, plus flights and hotel. A travel booking takes a 25 per cent deposit by transfer or crypto, to her or to us, and you pay her the balance at the start.
