Naturist Beaches Near Marbella: Where They Are, the Law and the Etiquette

Within an hour of Marbella there are half a dozen beaches where nudity is the norm, and one of them is inside the municipality: the stretch of Artola below the protected dunes, west of Cabopino. The best equipped is Costa Natura in Estepona, Spain's first official naturist resort, with its own long beach. Clients of an agency that arranges Marbella escorts ask us about these beaches more often than people expect, usually as part of planning a quiet day, so here is what we tell them. The naturist beaches near Marbella are Artola (15 to 20 minutes east), Playamarina in Mijas, Costa Natura in Estepona and Benalnatura in Benalmádena (all within about 35 minutes), with Cantarriján beyond Nerja for a day trip; nudity itself is legal, and the etiquette is what you need to know.

Is Nudity Legal on Spanish Beaches?

Yes. Spain has no general law against nudity in public; what the Penal Code punishes, in article 185, is obscene exhibition in front of minors or people with disabilities who need special protection. Towns can regulate beach use by ordinance, and Marbella's 2024 ordinance defines naturist zones without banning nudity elsewhere.

What the Law Actually Says

The Spanish Naturist Federation's position is that Spanish law allows nudism in any public space, and the criminal law bears that out. Article 185 of the Penal Code punishes anyone who performs or makes someone perform acts of obscene exhibition in front of minors or people with disabilities needing special protection, with six months to a year in prison or a fine. Being naked on a beach is not that offence. Behaviour that is sexual, or that targets other people, is a different matter, wherever it happens.

What Marbella's Beach Ordinance Says

Marbella's beach ordinance, published in August 2024, defines a naturist or nudist zone as part of a beach's bathing area that is marked and signposted as suitable for naturist bathing, and it contains no fine for nudity anywhere else. Other towns have gone further and then back: Cádiz removed its 2009 ban on nudism from its beach ordinance in August 2023, after the national ombudsman had asked for it. Legal everywhere is not the same as welcome everywhere, though. On a town beach full of families, keep to the naturist areas; topless sunbathing, by contrast, is unremarkable on every beach in Marbella.

Where Are the Naturist Beaches Near Marbella?

Artola, below the dunes west of Cabopino, is the only one inside Marbella. Playamarina in Mijas, Costa Natura in Estepona and Benalnatura in Benalmádena are all within about 35 minutes by car. Guadalmar in Málaga is 40 minutes away, and Cantarriján, in Granada province beyond Nerja, is a day trip of about an hour and three-quarters.

Artola: The One in Marbella

The naturist stretch is the open sand in front of the Artola dunes, a protected natural monument crossed by boardwalks and overlooked by the Torre Ladrones watchtower, just west of Cabopino marina. Costa Natura and Arroyo Vaquero, Estepona

Costa Natura, at kilometre 151 of the A-7 in Estepona, is Spain's first official naturist resort, more than 40 years old, with over 190 apartments and studios. Its beach, Arroyo Vaquero, also called Guadalobón, runs about 2,500 metres and is the best equipped naturist beach on this coast.

The Resort and Its Rules

Inside the resort nudity is the norm, swimwear is not allowed in the pools, jacuzzi or sauna, and a towel goes on every chair and sunbed. Day visitors and short-term members enter through reception, must show a naturist federation membership card, sign the community rules and are not accepted in July and August. Photographing or filming people in public areas without their written permission is forbidden. The resort welcomes families and couples and runs children's activities in the peak months, which tells you the tone: residential and quiet, not a party.

The Beach and the Kiosk

The beach itself is public, as every Spanish beach is, so you do not need to stay at the resort to use it. According to the federation it is about 2,500 metres long and 30 metres wide, about 8 km from the centre of Estepona. The resort's beach kiosk sells drinks, tapas and salads and rents a sunbed and parasol for €7.50 a day; it opens from March, daily in high summer, and closes in early November. One caution from the federation: a beach bar next to the resort, on the same beach, does not allow nudity on its sunbeds or at its bar.

Benalnatura, Playamarina and the Day Trips

East of Marbella, Playamarina in Mijas and Benalnatura in Benalmádena are the nearest alternatives to Artola, both under 40 minutes away. For a day out, Cantarriján in Granada province is the best-known naturist cove in Andalusia, with a nudist tradition of more than 50 years, and Bolonia, near Tarifa, is the federation's pick in Cádiz.

Benalnatura and Playamarina

Benalmádena's tourist board describes a naturist zone among its coves, and the federation identifies it as Benalnatura, on the Benalmádena Costa side of town about 35 km from Marbella. Playamarina, in the Calahonda area of Mijas, is closer at about 23 km; the federation describes calm, deep water over the Calahonda seabed, a protected site of 1,403.57 hectares designated in 2006 for its Posidonia meadows and gorgonian corals. Both are small, so on August weekends arrive early. Neither has the services of Costa Natura, so take water and shade.

Cantarriján, Beyond Nerja

Cantarriján lies inside the protected Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs, about five minutes from La Herradura on the old N-340 and roughly 140 km from Marbella. In summer, private cars are banned on the access road, so you walk down or take the seasonal minibus, which the federation lists at €2 return. The cove has sunbeds and two chiringuitos, one of which, La Barraca, has a terrace where nudity is welcome. It is a long day from Marbella, best done midweek and combined with lunch in Nerja on the way back.

The Etiquette That Matters

Three rules cover almost everything: no photographs of other people, a towel between your skin and any shared seat, and no staring or approaching people who have not invited it. Naturist beaches are family places as much as anything else, so anything that crosses from nudity into sexual behaviour gets people removed, and can bring in the law.

Phones and Cameras

This is the rule that causes the most trouble. A phone pointed in the general direction of other people on a naturist beach will be noticed, and Costa Natura's rules forbid photographing or filming individuals in public areas without their written permission. Take pictures of the sea, of each other with consent, or none at all. If you need your phone, use it facing the dunes, not the beach. The same courtesy applies to drones, which have no place over any crowded beach.

Towels, Boundaries and Behaviour

Sit on a towel, always. Respect the line between clothed and naturist areas, which on mixed beaches such as Artola is usually obvious from the people around you: undress once you are inside the naturist stretch, and dress before walking back past families. Clothing is optional, not compulsory, on most naturist beaches, but standing around fully dressed watching others is the quickest way to make people uncomfortable. Couples are welcome; overt displays of affection are not, and sexual behaviour on any public beach is out of the question.

When to Go and What to Take

May, June, September and early October are the best months: warm enough, with the sea averaging 18.4°C in May, 20.9°C in June, 21.8°C in September and 20.4°C in October, and far fewer people. Take high-factor sun cream, a parasol, a towel to sit on, water and food for Artola, which has almost nothing on the sand.

Sun, Shade and Supplies

First-time naturists burn in places that have never seen the sun, and an Andalusian August afternoon does not forgive it: factor 50, reapplied every two hours, and shade from noon to 17:00. Artola and Playamarina have no shade, so bring a parasol; Costa Natura rents one. Take more water than you think you need and a light cover-up for the walk to and from the car. Quiet Hours and Busy Ones

As on any beach here, weekday mornings are the quietest and Sundays from late morning the busiest. In high summer Costa Natura's kiosk opens every day from 10:30 to 18:30. If you are new to naturism, choose a weekday in June or September at Costa Natura, where the rules are written down and the regulars are welcoming, rather than a crowded Sunday at a small cove. Naturist Beaches and Companion Bookings

We are asked about this, so plainly: a beach day is possible only if the companion herself is comfortable with a naturist beach, and many are not. We ask her before we confirm, never after. Most clients keep it simple instead: the beach alone or with friends, and a companion for the evening that follows.

What We Ask Before Confirming

If a naturist beach is part of the plan, say so in your first message, with the beach and the hours. We put the question to the companion before the booking is confirmed, and her answer is final; nobody is asked to change her mind on the day. Everything in this guide applies to a booking as to anyone else: it is a public beach, often with children on it, and nothing about the day is sexual. Clients who would rather not ask usually book a dinner date for the evening instead.
