Summer in Marbella vs Ibiza, Mykonos and Saint-Tropez: Which Suits You?

Every spring some clients ask the same question before booking flights: Marbella this summer, or Ibiza, Mykonos or Saint-Tropez? We are a Marbella escort agency, so we are not neutral, but we also send companions to all three, and the differences can be measured. Ibiza is an island whose hotels almost all close in winter, Mykonos a town of 10,704 that lives for its summer; Saint-Tropez is a village of 3,582 people beside one famous beach; Marbella is a town of 159,786 with 24 beaches, an airport of 26.8 million passengers 55 km away and a season that never fully stops. Marbella, Ibiza, Mykonos or Saint-Tropez: Which Is Best for Summer?

Each wins something. Ibiza wins for clubbing and the warmest sea, Mykonos for an island scene, Saint-Tropez for long lunches on one famous beach. Marbella wins on range and access: Málaga is the busiest airport of the four, and one town offers beach, golf, restaurants and nightlife in a season that does not stop in October.

Getting There From Málaga and Marbella

Ibiza is the easy hop: 571 km in a straight line, on a route that carried 198,500 passengers in 2025. Saint-Tropez means flying to Nice, then 110 km by road. Mykonos is 2,639 km away, and its airport handled 1.6 million passengers in 2025, about a sixth of Ibiza's traffic.

Ibiza: The Short Hop

Málaga is the busiest of the four gateways, with 26,760,549 passengers in 2025, up 7.4%, and central Marbella is about 55 km from its Terminal 3. Málaga–Ibiza was the airport's ninth-busiest domestic route in 2025, up 9.2%, and weekend trips from Marbella are routine for us; our Ibiza travel guide covers taking a companion. On the island, buses link Ibiza Town with Platja d'en Bossa and Ses Salines, and Sant Antoni with Cala Conta.

Saint-Tropez and Mykonos: A Longer Day

Saint-Tropez has no large airport of its own. Nice Côte d'Azur handled 15,229,664 passengers in 2025 and sits 110 km away by road, about 1 hour 45 minutes without summer traffic; Toulon–Hyères is closer, at 53 km. Málaga has direct flights to Nice, but none listed to Mykonos, whose airport is far smaller, with 1,581,742 passengers in 2025, 2% fewer than in 2024; plan a connection and fewer flights a day. Both suit a week better than a weekend from Marbella.

Crowds: Summer Islands Against a Year-Round Coast

Ibiza and Formentera recorded 1.82 million hotel guest-nights in August 2026 and close almost completely in winter, with 28 hotels open in February. The Costa del Sol recorded 2.74 million in August and kept 380 hotels open in February. Mykonos and Saint-Tropez are small places that swell for the summer.

Ibiza Is a Summer Island

INE's hotel survey by tourist zone makes the difference plain. Hotels on Ibiza and Formentera went from 28 open in February 2026 to 300 in August, and hotel staff from 547 to 15,059; on the Costa del Sol the same months ran from 380 hotels to 505. Ibiza's August is also almost entirely foreign: residents of Spain took 12% of its hotel nights, against 31% on the Costa del Sol and 19% in Marbella. Rooms were about 90% occupied in both zones.

Mykonos and Saint-Tropez: Small Places, Big Summers

Mykonos has 10,704 residents on 85.5 square kilometres, and Saint-Tropez 3,582 on 15; its famous beach, Pampelonne, lies in neighbouring Ramatuelle. One widely quoted estimate puts Mykonos at 1.5 million visitors a year or more, with beds for about 50,000 a night, and Pampelonne spreads its 4.5 km over 27 hectares of sand, so in August both fill quickly. In Marbella a quieter beach is a short drive east, to Cabopino or the Artola dunes, and a quieter dinner is a table in the old town rather than on the port.

What Does a Summer Week Cost in Each?

Hotel rooms give the cleanest comparison. INE put Marbella's average daily rate at €378 in August 2026 and €416 in July, against €286 and €282 across Ibiza and Formentera and €224 and €207 on the Costa del Sol. Marbella's own hotels are the dearest here; the coast around them is cheaper than Ibiza.

Hotel Rates, Measured the Same Way

All three rows come from INE's average daily rate series, so they are measured the same way; INE publishes nothing comparable for Mykonos or Saint-Tropez. Marbella's July 2026 rate was 22% above the year before. A week in a Marbella hotel can therefore cost more than one in Ibiza. Further east it drops sharply: Fuengirola averaged €136 in August 2026 and Benalmádena €192, and our Benalmádena escorts cover that end of the coast.

Tables, Beach Beds and Getting Around

For its October 2026 closing nights, Pacha listed VIP zones from €300 or €450 a booking, returned as drinks of the same value. In Marbella, beach-club beds and minimum spends vary by row and by day, as our beach club prices guide shows. Marbella's taxis charge €3.79 plus €1.12 a kilometre by day and €4.64 plus €1.41 at night and at weekends, and the AP-7 toll from Málaga costs €9.25 from June to September. From the airport, a pre-booked car to Marbella costs €74 to €85, and the Avanza coach from €6.48.

Nightlife: Superclubs, Beach Clubs or Late Dinners?

Ibiza and Mykonos are built around clubs that open at 23:00 and close at 06:00 or 07:00. Marbella and Saint-Tropez are built around dinner: a 22:00 table, then a hotel club, Puerto Banús or Les Caves du Roy. If the trip is about DJs, choose Ibiza; if it is about the whole evening, Marbella.

Ibiza and Mykonos: Clubs Until Dawn

Pacha runs from 23:00 to 06:00, and Ibiza's 2026 season ended with a run of closings: Amnesia's 50th-anniversary festival on 30 September, a 19-hour finale with more than 25 DJs; Pacha's residents' closing parties from 5 to 7 October; Hï on 9 October; and UNVRS, the island's newest superclub, which bills itself as the world's first hyperclub, on 10 October. On Mykonos, Cavo Paradiso keeps club hours of 23:00 to 07:00, and beach clubs such as Nammos line Psarou beach.

Saint-Tropez and Marbella: Dinner First

Saint-Tropez's late room is Les Caves du Roy, the nightclub of the Hôtel Byblos, whose 1967 opening drew Brigitte Bardot and Gunter Sachs, and its long lunch is Club 55 on Pampelonne, running since 1955 and open from 27 March to 1 November in 2026. Marbella spreads the same evening across more places: Starlite's 49 concerts in a quarry, Puente Romano's COYA Club and NYX, and the bars and clubs of Puerto Banús. Beaches and the Sea: Where Is the Water Warmest?

Ibiza, by a distance: its sea averages 26.2°C in August and 25.3°C in September. Mykonos follows at 24.8°C, while Marbella (23.4°C) and Saint-Tropez (23.3°C) are cooler. Marbella's water is cooled by Atlantic inflow through the Strait of Gibraltar; on Mykonos, the summer meltemi wind tempers the heat on land.

The Beaches Themselves

Marbella's 27 km of coast is divided into 24 beaches, and ten Blue Flags flew there in 2026, eight on beaches and two on marinas. Pampelonne is a single 4.5 km sweep of sand in Ramatuelle, where beach clubs work under municipal concessions and the beach plan adopted in 2012 cut the bathing-and-restaurant lots to 23. Which Summer Trip Suits Whom?

Clubbers should go to Ibiza for the closing weeks, couples to Saint-Tropez in June or September, and island-hoppers to Mykonos. For a first trip, a mixed group or anyone who wants beach, golf, dinners and a few big nights from one base, Marbella is the safer choice, with the most flights.

The practical combination from here is Marbella and Ibiza: a week on the Costa del Sol, then two nights for the closing parties, with a 571 km flight between them. The timing works: in 2026 Ibiza's closings ran from 30 September to 10 October, just after Marbella's lifeguards stand down, when, on 2025's figures, its hotel rates are about a third below August's. Booking a Companion for Summer, Here or Away

In Marbella, July and August bookings cost the same as any other month, with a week's notice for a named companion. For Ibiza, Mykonos or Saint-Tropez, a travel companion is €5,000 a day, or €6,000 for the 48-hour weekend, plus flights and hotel, with about a week's notice. A travel booking can be changed free until seven days before.

Summer Bookings in Marbella

An hour on the Golden Mile or in Puerto Banús is €300, a yacht day is priced on the same hourly rate with the boat and the food paid separately, and a dinner date, a minimum of three hours, starts at €900. Taking a Companion to Ibiza, Mykonos or Saint-Tropez

Is Marbella better than Ibiza in summer?

For clubbing, no: Ibiza's superclubs run until 06:00 and its sea is about 3°C warmer in August. For a mixed trip, usually yes. Málaga's airport has about three times Ibiza's traffic, Marbella stays open all year, and one town offers beach, golf, restaurants and nightlife. The wider Costa del Sol is also cheaper per hotel night.

Is Marbella cheaper than Ibiza?

Marbella itself is not: INE's average hotel rate was €378 in August 2026, against €286 across Ibiza and Formentera. The Costa del Sol as a whole averaged €224 and Fuengirola €136, so a base further east, with evenings in Marbella, is the cheaper way to do it.

Where is the sea warmest in summer: Marbella, Ibiza, Mykonos or Saint-Tropez?

Ibiza, at about 26.2°C on average in August and 25.3°C in September. Mykonos averages 24.8°C in August, Marbella 23.4°C and Saint-Tropez 23.3°C. Marbella's water is cooler because Atlantic water flows in through the Strait of Gibraltar, about 80 km west of the town.

When do Ibiza's clubs close for the season?

In late September and early October. In 2026 Amnesia held its 50th-anniversary closing festival on 30 September, Pacha's residents held closing parties from 5 to 7 October, Hï closed on 9 October and UNVRS on 10 October. In winter the island empties: only 28 hotels were open on Ibiza and Formentera in February 2026.
