- Private rooms are booked against a minimum spend, usually with a set menu agreed in advance
- Typical capacities run from six to thirty; below six most restaurants will simply give you a quiet corner
- Expect the minimum to be roughly the restaurant's normal per-head spend multiplied by the room's capacity
- Lead time is one to three weeks; longer in August and for anything with a bespoke menu
- For eight or more, a villa with a private chef frequently costs less and works better
Private dining in Marbella is a well-developed category, because the coast hosts a great deal of business entertaining, family celebration and discreet group dining across the year. The mechanics are straightforward once explained — a minimum spend, a set menu agreed in advance, and a room to yourselves — but the pricing is opaque until someone tells you how it is calculated. And for larger groups there is a genuinely better alternative that most people do not consider. Marbella's private dining rooms are booked against a minimum spend with a set menu agreed in advance, typically seating six to thirty — and for eight or more, a villa with a private chef frequently costs less and works better. Our private chef post covers that alternative.
How Private Rooms Work
You reserve the room against a minimum spend, agree a set menu in advance, and the restaurant staffs it separately. The minimum is calculated from the room's capacity multiplied by a per-head figure. That calculation is the useful thing to understand.
How the Minimum Is Set
Roughly: the restaurant's normal per-head spend, multiplied by the room's seats, sometimes with a premium. A twelve-seat room in a restaurant averaging €120 a head will carry a minimum somewhere around €1,400–€1,800. That means a group of six in a twelve-seat room pays for twelve — which is why matching group size to room size matters.
Marbella has hosted international business and social entertaining since the 1950s, which is why its private-dining infrastructure is deeper than the town's size suggests.
The Set Menu
Agreed in advance, usually two or three choices per course rather than the full carte. This is standard and it works in your favour — the kitchen can cook a set menu for twelve simultaneously in a way it cannot cook twelve different orders. Dietary requirements go in at this stage; our vegetarian post covers how to specify them.
Wine
Either pre-agreed by the bottle or open from the list. Pre-agreeing is cheaper and removes the awkwardness of someone ordering an expensive bottle for a table someone else is paying for — a genuine consideration at a business dinner. Our wine post covers what is worth ordering.
What Size Group Needs One
Eight to thirty. Below six, most restaurants will give you a quiet corner table without a minimum, which is usually better. Above thirty you are looking at a venue rather than a restaurant. Match the group to the room.
Under Six
Ask for a quiet table rather than a private room. Any decent restaurant will place a party of four somewhere discreet at no extra cost, and the minimum on a private room for that number is poor value. Our date restaurants post covers what makes a table work for a small group.
Eight to Twenty
The sweet spot for a private room. Large enough that a normal table becomes unwieldy and separate conversations start, small enough that one room and one menu works. This is the size most private rooms on the coast are built for.
Above Twenty
Now you are choosing between a large private room, a restaurant buyout, or a villa. Costs diverge sharply at this point and the villa option becomes considerably more attractive — our villa planning post covers the staffing and logistics.
Where the Private Rooms Are
Mostly inside the Golden Mile resorts and the larger town restaurants. The resort complexes have the best facilities, since they were built to host events as well as diners. Two clusters.
The Resort Complexes
Purpose-built private rooms with separate entrances, dedicated staff and proper audio-visual facilities where a business dinner needs them. The Puente Romano and Marbella Club complexes have the most, and our hotel restaurants post covers the dining they attach to.
The Town and Inland
Larger restaurants in Marbella and inland toward Benahavís frequently have a back room or a mezzanine, at considerably lower minimums than the resorts. Less polished and better value — the same trade that applies across the coast, as our locals' guide describes.
When a Villa Beats a Private Room
For eight or more, frequently. A private chef at a rented villa costs €80–€200 per head including ingredients, against a restaurant minimum that assumes full per-head spend — and the evening has no end time. Run both numbers.
The Comparison
| For twelve people | Private room | Villa + chef |
|---|---|---|
| Food per head | €100 – €200 | €80 – €200 |
| Wine | 2–3× retail | Retail |
| Room / minimum | Applies | None |
| End time | Restaurant's | Yours |
| Transport | Both ways | None |
When the Villa Wins
When you are already renting one, when the evening is meant to continue afterwards, and when the wine matters — the retail-versus-markup difference on twelve people's wine is substantial on its own. Our private chef guide covers the format and our villa post the setting.
And When the Restaurant Wins
A business dinner where you want a neutral venue, a group not staying together, or an evening where nobody wants to be responsible for the house afterwards. Those are real advantages and they are why private rooms exist.
How Do You Book Private Room?
One to three weeks, longer in August or for a bespoke menu. Confirm the minimum, the menu, whether service is included and the room's actual capacity in writing before agreeing. Four things to get in writing.
What to Confirm
The minimum spend, what it includes, whether service charge sits on top, and the room's real capacity — not the number they will squeeze in. Deposits are normal for private rooms and cancellation terms are stricter than a table booking. Our deposits post makes the same point about advance commitments generally.
With Companions
A private room is a considerably easier setting for a group booking than a public dining room — no other tables, no arrival to navigate, and a defined guest list. Tell us the numbers and the format honestly; our group planning post explains why accurate briefing matters. Browse event companions for formal dinners.
The Evening Around It
Private rooms have an end time, which shapes the night. Plan where the group goes afterwards before you sit down, because deciding at midnight with twelve people rarely works. Two options.
Stay in the Complex
If the room is inside a Golden Mile resort, the plaza and the resort club are a walk away, which handles the after-dinner problem with no transport at all. It is the strongest argument for booking a private room in a resort rather than in town.
Or Into the Port
Ten minutes to Puerto Banús, where the clubs fill from one. Book the cars in advance for the whole group — twelve people looking for taxis at midnight is a forty-minute problem. Our nightclub guide covers what happens next.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do private dining rooms work in Marbella?
You reserve the room against a minimum spend and agree a set menu in advance. The minimum is roughly the restaurant's normal per-head spend multiplied by the room's capacity — so a group of six in a twelve-seat room pays for twelve.
What size group needs a private room?
Eight to thirty. Below six, most restaurants will give you a quiet corner table at no extra cost, which is better value. Above thirty you are looking at a restaurant buyout or a villa rather than a private dining room.
Is a villa with a chef cheaper than a private room?
For eight or more, frequently. A private chef costs €80–€200 per head including ingredients, wine is bought at retail rather than at a two to three times markup, there is no room minimum, and the evening has no end time.
How far ahead should I book?
One to three weeks, longer in August or if you want a bespoke menu rather than a standard set one. Deposits are normal for private rooms and cancellation terms are stricter than for an ordinary table booking, so check them.
What should I confirm in writing?
The minimum spend and what it includes, whether service charge sits on top, the agreed menu, and the room's genuine capacity rather than the number they will squeeze in. Those four things cover every private-dining dispute we have heard of.
Planning a Group Dinner?
Tell us the numbers, the venue and the format — restaurant room or villa with a chef. We will suggest companions suited to a group dinner rather than a two-person evening, and quote it as one figure.
