Key Takeaways:
  • Marbella's 80 open hotels and guesthouses averaged about 81 rooms each in August 2026, on INE's figures; all seven picks here have 40 or fewer.
  • Five are in the old town: La Fonda, Hotel Claude, La Morada Más Hermosa, La Villa Marbella and The Town House.
  • Tripadvisor's standard-room bands run from €82 a night at La Villa Marbella to €897 at La Fonda.
  • Hotel Claude and La Villa Marbella staff the desk through the night; La Morada's closes at 19:00 and The Town House gives guests a key to the street door.

INE counted 80 hotels and guesthouses open in Marbella in August 2026, with 6,463 rooms between them: about 81 each. The seven below have 40 or fewer, and four of them occupy houses that predate the town's tourist boom by a century or more. When clients of our agency want a name on the door rather than a number on the key, this is the list we send, and it pairs well with an escort in Marbella for dinner in the old town. Our seven boutique picks for 2026 are La Fonda, Hotel Claude, La Morada Más Hermosa, La Villa Marbella and The Town House in the old town, Boho Club on the Golden Mile and the Río Real Golf Hotel to the east.

Each entry gives rooms, setting, what it does well and badly, and a price band. The big resorts are in our five-star hotels review.

What Counts as a Boutique Hotel in Marbella?

For this guide, a boutique hotel has fewer than 60 rooms, an owner or small group behind it and a building with a story. Marbella's 80 open hotels and guesthouses averaged about 81 rooms each in August 2026, so anything at 40 or below is genuinely small. Most of them sit in the old town's pedestrian lanes. Stars matter less at this size.

Small by Marbella Standards

The figures come from INE's hotel occupancy survey: 80 hotels and guesthouses open in Marbella in August 2026, 6,463 rooms and 84.6% of them occupied. Those figures are weighted towards resorts of 200 rooms and more, which is why the town's small hotels are easy to miss.

Do not read too much into their stars. The Junta de Andalucía registers La Morada Más Hermosa as a two-star hotel and The Town House as a two-star hostal, while Hotel Claude is a four-star; at this size the category tracks facilities, not character. Our older luxury hotels overview covers the big names this guide leaves out.

La Fonda and Hotel Claude: The Two Historic Houses

La Fonda and Hotel Claude are the two most storied buildings in this list. La Fonda fills three restored houses on the Plaza del Santo Cristo with 20 rooms and suites; Hotel Claude has seven rooms in a 17th-century manor on Calle San Francisco. Both sit in the upper old town, ten minutes or so from the beach on foot.

La Fonda Heritage Hotel: Relais & Châteaux on the Santo Cristo

By the hotel's account, the site has been a private house, a church and a school, then a hotel and, from the late 1980s, a restaurant where Marbella's artists and socialites met. The restoration uncovered the altar of the 16th-century Hermitage of San Sebastián and original frescoes. Its 20 rooms and suites are reached by covered passageways, and it bills itself as the first Relais & Châteaux member in Andalusia.

Best at: dinner and history without leaving the building, with a roof bar for afterwards. Not: a beach stay, because the sand is ten minutes downhill. Band: €235 to €897.

Hotel Claude: Seven Rooms and an Opera Singer's House

The hotel's own history ties the house to Eugenia de Montijo, the Granada-born Empress of France. In the early 1970s it became the home of the French opera singer Claude Devoize and her husband Juan Berjano, who held rehearsals and dances there into the mid-1980s. The seven rooms (three superior, three luxury, one suite) were refurbished in 2020 around a marble patio and a rooftop terrace.

Best at: service. Guests note someone at reception around the clock, and in autumn 2026 Tripadvisor ranked it second of 81 Marbella hotels on 714 reviews. Not: availability, because seven rooms go early in July. Band: €298 to €453.

Courtyard Houses: La Morada, La Villa and The Town House

Three cheaper old-town houses fill the rest of the list. La Morada Más Hermosa has eight rooms around two patios, La Villa Marbella is an 1850s townhouse with the lowest prices here, and The Town House is a nine-room townhouse with a roof garden and a terrace on Plaza Tetuán. All three are a short walk from the Orange Square.

La Morada Más Hermosa: An 18th-Century House on Calle Montenebros

The hotel's house history records a shipowner as its owner in 1792; over the years it was split into several homes. Restoration began in 2000, the hotel opened in 2003 and it now fills the whole house: 468 square metres over three levels, eight rooms and two open-air patios. Reception is staffed from 09:00 to 19:00; later arrivals check in online and let themselves in.

Best at: quiet and value; the duplex Room 8 has a private terrace over the rooftops. Not: heavy luggage, as the tower room is reached by the original 18th-century staircase. Band: €145 to €213.

La Villa Marbella: An 1850s Townhouse With a 24-Hour Desk

Calle Príncipe 10 was built in the late 1850s as a private house, rooms around a central courtyard and narrow staircases that survive. Each room is named after a city of the East and dressed to match, and breakfast is on the roof terrace. The house at number 10 is registered with four rooms; Tripadvisor describes the hotel's rooms as spread through the old town's lanes.

Best at: price, and a 24-hour concierge, which is rare at this size. The Orange Square is three minutes away and the beach eight. Not: anyone who wants a pool. Band: €82 to €296, on almost 2,000 reviews averaging 4.9.

The Town House: Plaza Tetuán and a Roof Garden

The Town House stands on Calle Alderete with a terrace on Plaza Tetuán, a residents-only roof garden and a wine lounge pouring bottles from the owners' Casa Panciu winery. Breakfast and a drink are included, the Paseo Marítimo is three minutes' walk, and it takes guests aged 14 and over.

Best at: an easy, sociable base for the old town by night. Not: late service, because reception is not staffed through the night and guests get a key to the street door. Band: €177 to €233.

Beyond the Old Town: Boho Club and the Río Real Golf Hotel

Two small hotels outside the old town make the list. Boho Club is a 40-room five-star in 25,000 square metres of gardens on the Golden Mile, and the Río Real Golf Hotel has 30 rooms inside a golf course east of town. Both suit longer stays, and both need a car or a taxi for dinner in town. The gardens are the point of both.

Boho Club: A Five-Star on Swedish Ground

Boho Club stands on the grounds of a Swedish rest centre founded in 1968 and opened by the Swedish ambassador in 1969. It has been a Preferred Hotels member since 2022, the Michelin Guide recommended it in 2025, and Diego del Río runs the kitchen. Rooms start at 28 square metres; The One, a two-bedroom bungalow, has 80.

Best at: pool days and dinner without leaving, five minutes' walk from the beach. Not: a modest bill, with a band of €243 to €822. Our Golden Mile escorts page covers the strip around it.

Río Real Golf Hotel: Thirty Rooms on the 11th Hole

Río Real has been a golf club since 1965, on a course by Javier Arana. Its hotel has 30 rooms decorated by Pascua Ortega, each with a terrace facing the 11th hole, and the Albatros Suite runs past 100 square metres. Hotel guests get preferential tee times, and Málaga airport is 50 kilometres away. It calls itself Marbella's first boutique hotel, a title Hotel Claude claims too.

Best at: golf and quiet. Not: walking to dinner. Band: €187 to €665.

Near Misses: Las Dunas, Amàre and a Five-Room Villa

Three names that come up when clients ask for small hotels did not make our seven. Grand Hotel Las Dunas in Estepona is too big at 69 rooms, Amàre Beach Hotel has 236, and The Marbella Heights is small enough but shows no guest reviews since 2024.

Just Over the Line

Grand Hotel Las Dunas, Autograph Collection, on the old N-340 in Estepona, is registered Gran Lujo with 69 rooms, nine over our limit, and it is the nearest thing to a boutique five-star on that stretch. Our Estepona escorts page covers bookings there. Clients also ask about Amàre Beach Hotel Marbella, but at 236 rooms it is a four-star resort, and Nobu Hotel Marbella is a hotel within the Puente Romano resort rather than a house of its own.

Worth a Call Before Booking

The Marbella Heights is a five-room house in the Río Real hills with Asian-style rooms, a heated pool and views to the sea. Its website still takes requests, but its latest Tripadvisor reviews date from September 2024, so confirm it is open before planning around it. The same rule applies to any small hotel whose last reviews are a season old: at eight or ten rooms, a change of owner can close the door without much notice.

Are Small Hotels Easier or Harder for a Visitor?

Both. A small hotel has fewer people to pass, but they know every guest by sight, and some desks close at night. The easiest are Hotel Claude and La Villa Marbella, staffed all night, and Boho Club's garden bungalows. The hardest are houses that require every visitor registered but leave nobody at the desk.

Who Is at the Desk at Midnight

At a 300-room resort a visitor at midnight is unremarkable; at a nine-room house she may be the only person in the hall. Hotel Claude and La Villa Marbella keep someone on through the night, so arrival is a word at the desk. La Morada's reception closes at 19:00, after which guests let themselves in using instructions sent with online check-in, and The Town House gives guests a key to the street door, which means you come down and let her in.

Courtyards, Stairs and the Registration Rule

Old-town houses put rooms round a patio, so the walk is short but in view: at La Morada and La Villa the courtyard is the corridor. The lanes are pedestrian, so a car stops at the edge and the last few minutes are on foot; we time arrivals for that.

Small hotels also write their own rules. The Town House's terms bar unregistered visitors from guest rooms, and La Morada's let nobody outside the booking stay the night without the hotel's prior authorisation, with a supplement where it applies. Spanish hotels must register every overnight guest aged 14 or over anyway, so tell the hotel in advance and it stays a formality.

Our escort-friendly hotels list covers the larger hotels. For an unhurried evening in a small one, our girlfriend experience companions are the usual fit.

Which Boutique Hotel in Marbella Should You Book?

For history and food, La Fonda. For service in a tiny house, Hotel Claude. For quiet on a budget, La Morada Más Hermosa. For the lowest price, La Villa Marbella. For company and a roof garden, The Town House. For a pool and gardens, Boho Club. For golf, the Río Real Golf Hotel.

Matching the Hotel to the Trip

For two or three nights built around dinners, stay in the old town and walk everywhere. For a week, Boho Club or Río Real give you a pool and space, and our hotels versus villas guide covers the step up from there. Travelling with young children rules out The Town House, which takes guests from 14; La Fonda and Boho Club both take families. For an anniversary, ask for La Morada's Room 8, the duplex with its own roof terrace, or Hotel Claude's single suite.

Booking a Companion Around a Small Hotel

An hour is €300 and two hours €600, on the Golden Mile as in the old town, with her taxi paid by you. A dinner date is three hours at least, so from €900, and an overnight €3,000 to €4,000 depending on the companion and the length. Send the hotel, your room and the hours its desk is staffed. All five old-town houses are a few minutes' walk from the restaurants around the Orange Square, so a dinner followed by the short walk back suits them best; at Boho Club or Río Real, add the taxi to the plan. Our old-town tapas guide lists where to eat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best boutique hotel in Marbella old town?

For most couples, Hotel Claude: seven rooms in a 17th-century house, a desk staffed around the clock and Tripadvisor's second-highest ranking in Marbella. La Fonda is the grander choice, with 20 rooms and its own restaurant and roof bar, and La Morada Más Hermosa the quieter, cheaper one.

Can a visitor stay overnight at a small hotel in Marbella?

Yes, if the hotel registers her as a guest. Spanish hotels must record everyone aged 14 or over who stays the night, and some small houses add rules of their own: La Morada Más Hermosa needs prior authorisation and may charge a supplement, and The Town House bars unregistered visitors. Tell the hotel in advance.

Which small hotels in Marbella have 24-hour reception?

Hotel Claude and La Villa Marbella both keep the desk staffed through the night, and La Villa lists a 24-hour concierge service. La Morada Más Hermosa's reception runs from 09:00 to 19:00, with online check-in after that, and The Town House gives guests a key to the street door.

Is there a boutique hotel on the beach in Marbella?

Not among our seven. Boho Club is about five minutes' walk from the sand on the Golden Mile, The Town House three minutes from the Paseo Marítimo and La Villa Marbella eight. If sand at the door matters most, the beachfront five-stars on the Golden Mile are the better choice.

How much does a boutique hotel in Marbella cost?

Tripadvisor's published bands for a standard room run from €82 a night at La Villa Marbella in low season to €897 at La Fonda at the top of the year. Most of the old-town houses sit between about €145 and €450, with July and August at the upper end.
