Playa de la Venus Marbella: The Old Town's Secret Beach

Marbella's good beaches are mostly a car ride away, which makes Playa de la Venus useful in a way that has nothing to do with being the best sand in the municipality. It sits directly beside the old town and the municipal port, sheltered by the breakwater, two minutes' walk from the Alameda and five from the Plaza de los Naranjos — which means you can leave a restaurant, swim, and be back in the quarter within the hour. Playa de la Venus is a small sheltered beach beside Marbella's old town and fishing port — the only beach in the municipality genuinely walkable from the historic centre, and best used as a two-hour beach rather than a full day. Where It Is

Immediately east of Marbella's municipal port, at the foot of the old town. Two minutes from the Alameda park and five from the Plaza de los Naranjos, entirely on foot. Walkability is the whole point.

The Walk From the Old Town

Down the Avenida del Mar from the Alameda — the promenade with the Salvador Dalí bronzes along it — and you are on the sand. It is genuinely five minutes from the centre of the casco antiguo, which no other beach in Marbella can claim.

Marbella's old town retains its Moorish street plan, with castle walls dating from the 10th century a short walk above the beach.

The Fishing Port

Marbella's working municipal port sits immediately west, which shelters the beach and gives the area a different character from the resort stretches — fishing boats, a small marina, and restaurants that serve what came off them. Our locals' guide covers that side of the town.

What the Beach Is Actually Like

Small, sheltered and busy. The breakwater keeps the water calm, which makes it good for swimming and for anyone who dislikes waves, but the sand is a fraction of what the eastern beaches offer. Convenience over space.

Sheltered Water

The port breakwater blocks the swell, which means the water here is calmer than the open beaches on any day with a breeze — including during the easterly Levante, when the rest of the coast is choppy. That makes it a genuinely useful fallback rather than merely a convenient one.

It Is Small

And in August it fills. This is a town beach serving a town, not a resort beach with capacity. Two hours in the morning is what it is for; a full August Saturday there is a mistake when Elviria is fifteen minutes east with several kilometres of empty sand.

When Should You Use It?

Morning, out of the peak weeks, or as a swim between other things. Its value is that you can be on it within five minutes of deciding to be, which no other Marbella beach offers. Three good uses.

A Morning Swim

Before nine, before it fills, with the old town waking up behind you. Combined with breakfast at a bar afterwards — tostada and a coffee for three euros — it is one of the better cheap mornings in Marbella. Our breakfast post covers the second half.

Between Other Things

An hour of sea between lunch in the old town and the evening. That kind of flexibility is simply not available at a beach that requires a taxi in each direction, and it is why residents use this beach rather than the better ones.

Out of Season

Facilities

Full municipal provision — showers, lifeguards in season, sunbed hire and beach bars, plus everything the town offers thirty seconds away. It is the best-served beach in Marbella by that measure. Two practical points.

How It Compares

Worse sand than the eastern beaches, better location than any of them. It is a convenience beach and it should be judged as one rather than against the wide empty stretches fifteen minutes away. An honest comparison.

Against the Eastern Beaches

No contest on sand, space or water quality — Artola and Cabopino are in a different category. But they need a car and half an hour, and this needs neither. For a day at the beach, go east; for an hour, stay here.

Against the Golden Mile

Playa Nagüeles has better-maintained sand and the resort beach clubs. This has a working town behind it and costs nothing. Which is better depends entirely on whether you want service or a five-minute walk to a tapas bar.

As Part of a Day in the Old Town

Swim in the morning, breakfast at a bar, the quarter in the afternoon, and dinner in the lanes. It is the cheapest good day in Marbella and it requires no transport at all. Two ways to use it.

The Whole Day on Foot

Beach at eight, breakfast at nine, the old town and the Moorish walls through the day, tapas at nine and dinner after. Nothing in that costs much and none of it involves a car — which on this coast is unusual enough to be worth doing once.
