Staying in Sotogrande: The Marina, the Beach and Bookings From Marbella

Sotogrande is where clients go when Marbella is too loud. The estate sits across the provincial border in Cádiz, has no club strip and goes quiet early by Costa del Sol standards, and the people who stay there tend to stay for a week rather than a night. That changes how an evening with a companion works, and it is the question our agency answers most often about the place. Sotogrande is a private estate in San Roque, 48 km west of Puerto Banús and about 40 minutes by the AP-7; bookings there carry a two-hour minimum because a companion's evening includes the drive both ways, so dinner dates and overnights suit it far better than an hourly visit.

How Far Is Sotogrande From Marbella, and What Does the Drive Cost?

Puerto Banús to the Sotogrande marina is 48 km by road and Marbella's old town 55.5 km, about 40 to 45 minutes on the AP-7 in light traffic. The two toll plazas on the way, San Pedro and Manilva, cost a car €6.30 each way in 2026, rising to €10.30 from June to September.

The higher season covers June to September plus the 17 days around Easter. The free A-7 avoids both plazas but slows through Estepona's roundabouts in summer, and after dinner the toll road is worth every cent. Full tariffs are on the Autopista del Sol site.

Gibraltar or Málaga: Which Airport?

Gibraltar is the near airport: 24 km by road from the marina, about half an hour plus the border, and SO/ Sotogrande puts it at 25 km from the hotel. Málaga is 109 km away, roughly 85 minutes, but has far more flights; it handled 26.8 million passengers in 2025, according to Aena. The Estate: Four Zones and the Golf Club That Came First

Sotogrande was founded in 1962 by Joseph McMicking and covers about 20 km², which its developer calls the largest private estate in Spain. It divides into four zones: La Reserva, La Marina, Sotogrande Alto and Sotogrande Costa. Wikipedia gives it 3,292 residents in 2025, a small town spread over a very large map.

The zones matter for a booking because the estate is large and its addresses are not intuitive. La Marina is the port and the apartments around Ribera del Marlin, the part with most evening life. Sotogrande Costa is the older coastal part, with the first golf course and the beach houses. Sotogrande Alto runs inland, where SO/ Sotogrande stands on Avenida Almenara. La Reserva is a gated community with its own club and a man-made lagoon. Holiday lets are scarce: INE counted 493 tourist dwellings in the whole municipality of San Roque in May 2026, against 6,987 in Marbella.

Old Sotogrande: The Golf Club That Started It

The estate grew around the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, opened in 1964 on Paseo del Parque, about 150 metres from the sea. It was Robert Trent Jones's first course in Europe, and the club describes it as the axis around which the development was organised: par 72, 6,492 metres, about a hundred bunkers. Its clubhouse, by the architect Luis Gutiérrez Soto, is one of three architecturally protected buildings on the estate. The streets around it are purely residential, and we ask for a dropped pin rather than a street name for any address there.

Puerto Sotogrande has 1,382 berths and round-the-clock security, and Ribera del Marlin, the quay of restaurants and terraces facing the boats, is where the estate's evenings happen. Expect a long dinner and a drink rather than a club; in summer the marina adds evening markets, and on Sundays El Mercado de Levante.

What the Marina Is Like at Night

The marina is the closest Sotogrande comes to Puerto Banús, and it is not close. Puerto Sotogrande lists 1,382 berths, but the quay is busy at dinner and quieter after midnight, which suits a dinner date: walk the boats, eat outside and, if you are staying on the marina, walk home. Fresco Marina, at Ribera del Marlin 20, opens daily from 9:00 to 23:00 and covers sushi, raw seafood and grilled meat and fish, an easy first table. Parking is the usual friction; there are 350 public spaces under Ribera del Marlin and a 24-hour car park at the Mercado de Levante.

Markets and Summer Evenings on the Quay

Two markets give the marina its calendar. El Mercado de Levante, with candy-striped stalls of antiques, clothes and food, runs on Sundays and is, by the developer's account, one of the best in the region. In summer there are evening markets on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 19:00 to midnight, and in July and August a wider programme of events on the quay. For a couple staying a week, a Wednesday market and dinner on Ribera del Marlin is the easiest evening on the estate. The Beach, the Guadiaro Estuary and La Reserva's Lagoon

Sotogrande's shore runs south from the marina past the mouth of the Guadiaro, a 27-hectare natural area, to the beach houses of the older estate. Inland, La Reserva offers an alternative: a freshwater lagoon with a sandy shore, beach restaurants and water sports, open daily through the summer season.

Paseo del Río and the Estuary

Paseo del Río follows the Guadiaro where it meets the sea, just south of the port. The estuary is a protected natural area of 27 hectares, so the river mouth stays undeveloped between the marina and the beach houses. El Octógono, on Paseo del Río, is a beach and social club with pools and courts that has been running for more than four decades, but it is a members' club, so it is not a plan for visitors. The public beach beyond is long and open, with none of the rows of beach clubs you find in Marbella, which makes a morning walk after an overnight a quiet one.

The Beach at La Reserva

La Reserva Club calls The Beach the only inland beach oasis in southern Spain: a freshwater lagoon with more than 2,800 m² of sand, loungers and shaded daybeds, a sports lagoon for kayaks, paddleboards and electric surfboards, and an adult water-sports area. Ancala, its restaurant, cooks Andalusian and Mediterranean food with Nikkei and Josper-grilled dishes, and Chiringa is the casual option. It opens daily through the summer season. For a calm day with a companion it beats the sea on a windy afternoon, but check the club's booking terms before promising it to anyone.

Where Should You Eat in Sotogrande?

For an occasion, SO/ Sotogrande: Cortijo Santa María 1962, under the Michelin-starred chef Nicolas Isnard, or MARXA, its wood-fire chiringuito. For an easy night, Fresco Marina on the quay or Ancala at La Reserva's lagoon. After dinner, IXO at SO/ has live Spanish guitar and flamenco.

All three are at SO/ Sotogrande on Avenida Almenara, so one car covers the night. Cortijo Santa María 1962, whose name carries the estate's founding year, does a contemporary take on Andalusian cooking with seasonal local produce and regional wines, under Nicolas Isnard. MARXA is a chiringuito built around a five-metre wood-fired grill, with fish, premium meat, cocktails and DJ sessions. IXO serves cocktails and tapas with live Spanish guitar and flamenco. For a dinner date it is the most complete evening on the estate: dinner, music, then a hotel lobby to wait in for the car.

On the Quay, by the Lagoon, or Back in Marbella

Fresco Marina is the reliable quay option, and because it opens at 9:00 it works for a late breakfast after an overnight as well as for dinner. Ancala, at La Reserva's lagoon, is the lunch table: seafood, rice dishes and Josper-grilled meat close to the sand. Some kitchens close earlier outside July and August, so book and confirm the night. Where to Stay: SO/ Sotogrande, a Villa or the Marina

SO/ Sotogrande, the estate's five-star resort on Avenida Almenara, suits a stay of a few nights. For a week, a villa in Sotogrande Alto or La Reserva, or an apartment on the marina, gives more space and more privacy. Finca Cortesín in Casares, 15 km east, is the quieter alternative.

SO/ Sotogrande offers rooms, studios, two-bedroom suites and penthouse apartments, with three pools, a 3,500 m² spa and its own 18-hole course, The Alto Club. For a companion visit it behaves like any resort: a lobby, a bar and restaurants busy with non-residents, so an arrival before dinner is unremarkable. Villas and Marina Apartments

For a week, a villa is the Sotogrande default. In La Reserva or Sotogrande Alto that means a gated zone and a garden where nobody sees an arrival; on the marina, an apartment over Ribera del Marlin puts dinner downstairs. Either way, send a dropped pin and the gate routine with the booking, because a companion arriving at 21:00 should not be reading a map at a barrier. For context, a Marbella dinner date is a minimum of three hours, so from €900, and an overnight is €3,000–€4,000 for ten to twelve; the price is the same at weekends and in July and August. A Sotogrande booking uses the same rates with a two-hour minimum, and the client pays her taxi, whose journey includes the AP-7 tolls (€12.60 return, €20.60 in summer); we say when we quote if the distance or a very early start adds to the price. A booking made in advance carries a 25% deposit by transfer or crypto, to her or to us, with the balance paid to her at the start; a same-day booking needs none. Overnights, Dinner Dates and Notice

An hourly visit makes little sense here: Sotogrande carries a two-hour minimum, and an hour of company costs an hour and a half of driving. A dinner date fits a night at SO/ or on the quay, and an overnight fits the estate best, because nobody wants to drive back to Marbella at two.
