The honest answer to when to visit Marbella is not the one most people assume, and it comes down to a quirk of Mediterranean physics: the sea here warms with a lag and is at its warmest in September, not July. Combine that with an emptying coast, falling prices and air that is still hot, and the case for one particular month becomes difficult to argue with. This is the whole year assessed honestly, including the months that are worse than their reputation. Why September Wins
The Mediterranean peaks at 24–26°C in late August and September because it warms with a thermal lag. Combine that with hot air, an emptying coast and prices coming off peak, and the month is unusually good. Four things converge.
The Sea Is Warmest

June: The Other Good Month
The season fully open, water warm enough, and the August crowd not yet arrived. It is September's mirror image and almost as good — the one difference being slightly cooler water. The best of the first half.
Everything Is Running
Beach clubs at full programme, watersports operating, restaurants open, and the Starlite season beginning. Nothing is closed and nothing is full — which is a combination that only exists in June and September.
One Caveat
The Feria de San Bernabé fills the town for a week in June. If you want to see it, that is a reason to come; if you do not, it is a week to avoid. Our events calendar covers the dates.
May and October
Excellent on every measure except swimming comfort. Warm days, empty beaches, the lowest prices of the season, and everything open. The sea is briskly cool in May and pleasantly warm in October. Underrated in both directions.
May
Beach clubs open after the opening parties, weather reliably good, and the coast still quiet. The sea is 16–19°C, which is brisk. For anything except a swimming holiday, May is one of the best months of the year here.
October
The sea is still 21–23°C, the air is comfortable, the beach clubs run into mid-month, and prices have fallen properly. It is the best value month with genuinely warm water and it is materially quieter than September. Our conditions post covers what is still operating.
July and August: The Honest Assessment
The biggest scene, the best programming, the fullest venues — and the highest prices, the worst congestion and the hardest booking of the year. Come for the scene or not at all. Both sides.
The Case For
Everything is at maximum. The beach clubs, the nightlife, the superyacht season in Puerto Banús, the festival programme. If what you want from Marbella is the scene at its most spectacular, it only exists in these six weeks and there is no substitute for it. Our peak season guide covers how to handle it.
The Case Against
Everything costs more and everything needs booking a week ahead. Restaurants, taxis, beach club beds and companion availability all compete. And the heat between one and five is genuinely oppressive. For a trip that is about the coast rather than the scene, August is the wrong month.
November to March
A different trip rather than a worse one. Mild days, an empty coast, the lowest prices of the year, and a town that belongs to its residents. The beach season is over and much of the seasonal infrastructure closes. For a specific kind of visit.

The Two Exceptions

Ask what the trip is for. Swimming and sun: September. The scene: August. Value and space: May or October. Golf, walking and quiet: winter. The month follows from the answer. One question settles it.
By What You Want
A beach and sea trip wants September. A nightlife trip wants July or August. A food, walking and driving trip is better in the shoulder or winter, when the mountain roads are empty and the inland day trips are at their best. There is no single best month, only a best month for a purpose.
