From November to March Marbella runs at about half its summer size. INE counted 54 hotels open in January 2026 against 80 that August, with 3,967 rooms for sale against 6,808 in July, and about half the hotel staff. What remains is the town residents live in: restaurants with tables, the golf courses, the old town and the hills, under afternoons of 16 to 20°C. What Is Marbella Like in Winter?
Smaller, cheaper and mostly foreign. INE's hotel survey shows a third of summer's hotels shut in January, guest-nights down to about a fifth of August's, and room rates at their lowest. The weather stays mild by northern standards, with 16 to 20°C afternoons, but rain and short evenings shape the day.

Half the Hotels, a Fifth of the Guests
INE's hotel survey recorded 71,273 guest-nights in Marbella in January 2026, against 346,352 that August, with rooms 38% occupied, and 2,810 hotel staff against 5,688 that August. Guests resident abroad still took 77% of January's hotel nights; Spanish visitors come mainly for the long weekends and Christmas. Among the closed hotels this winter is the Gran Meliá Don Pepe, shut since 15 October 2025 for refurbishment, with a reopening planned for late 2026 or 2027.
Winter Weather: Mild Afternoons, Wet Spells, Early Dark
Marbella's 1981–2010 normals give afternoons of 16.4°C to 19.5°C and nights of 9.4°C to 12.9°C from November to March. December is the wettest month, with 132 mm on about nine days. On the shortest day the sun sets at 18:08, so evenings start cold and early.
Day, Night and Indoors
The WMO's figures for Marbella, supplied by AEMET, make January the coldest month at 16.4°C by day and 9.4°C by night. Frost is almost unknown: Málaga airport averages 0.1 frost days a year, and its record low is −3.8°C, from February 1954. Warm spells are commoner, such as 29.4°C at the airport on 12 December 2023. Rain, Wind and Daylight
Rain comes in spells: Marbella averages 109 mm in November, 132 mm in December and 89 mm in January, falling to 57 mm in March. At the airport, five or six days a month bring gusts of 55 km/h or more. Sunshine still runs to 161 hours in December and 223 in March. Daylight is the real constraint, 9 hours 40 minutes at the solstice, until the clocks go forward on 28 March 2027. Our weather guide has the full year.
What Closes in Winter, and What Stays Open
The beach economy closes: lifeguards stop on 30 September, the bathing season ends on 15 October and beach clubs shut until around Easter. Restaurants, the old town, golf courses, the Golden Mile's year-round resorts and the theatre carry on, with nightlife thinner and concentrated at weekends.
The Beach Out of Season
The sand is open all winter, but unsupervised: lifeguards return only for Holy Week, then weekends until daily cover resumes on 1 June. The sea averages 15.6°C to 18.2°C, cold enough that a wetsuit makes sense for anything longer than a dip. From 15 October the licensed moragas, beach barbecues, move to a 12:00 to 20:00 slot. Chiringuitos count as fixed establishments under the beach ordinance, so some serve lunch on sunny winter days while the beach clubs stay shut.
Hotels, Restaurants and Nights Out
Restaurants in the old town and San Pedro serve Marbella's 159,786 registered residents all year, so they stay open and become easy to book. Starlite moves to Madrid from November to February, and Puerto Banús is busiest at weekends. The Teatro Ciudad de Marbella's main season runs from January to May, with most seats at €5 to €25, and the Museo Ralli on the Golden Mile is free; our arts guide covers the programme.
November and December: Storms, Long Weekends and Christmas
November is the first properly wet month and the quietest of the autumn, apart from the long weekend to Monday 2 November. December has 132 mm of rain and two busy spells: the Constitution weekend from 5 to 8 December, and the fortnight from Christmas Eve to Reyes on 6 January.
November: First Storms, Then Quiet
Rooms were 55% occupied in November 2025, at €171 on average. All Saints' Day falls on a Sunday in 2026, so Monday 2 November is the holiday. The Dalí exhibition at the Museo del Grabado runs to 15 November, at €5. The Senda Azul sailing race passes Puerto Banús on the 7th. Autumn storms, which AEMET warns of by colour, can close a terrace for a day or two, while sunsets come at about 18:10 by mid-month.
December: Two Busy Spells in a Quiet Month
Constitution Day falls on a Sunday in 2026, so Monday 7 December and Tuesday 8 December make a four-day weekend. INE recorded rooms only 40% occupied in December 2025 but an average rate of €227, against €171 in November, because of the festive nights. Christmas Day is a Friday in 2026, and the AP-7 charges its off-season €5.70 from Málaga all winter. January to March: The Quietest Weeks of the Year
After the Reyes parade on 5 January Marbella has its emptiest weeks: January 2026 had the year's lowest hotel occupancy and February its lowest room rate, €136. March warms to 18.4°C and lengthens the evenings, and in 2027 Holy Week, from 21 to 28 March, ends winter early.
January and February: Empty and Cheap
Only 54 hotels were open in January 2026, rooms were 38% occupied and the sea averages 16.1°C. February brings slightly warmer afternoons, 16.9°C, the year's lowest room rate and Andalusia Day on 28 February, a regional holiday. The town hall's free guided walk to the Laguna de Fuente de Piedra on 17 January is timed for the flamingos. Sunset moves from 18:15 on 1 January to about 19:00 by mid-February.
March: Longer Evenings and an Early Easter
March averages 18.4°C by day and 223 hours of sun, and by mid-month the sun sets at about 19:27. Hotels reopen through the month: 69 were open in March 2026 against 57 in February. In 2027 Holy Week runs from Palm Sunday, 21 March, to Easter Sunday, 28 March, so the processions, the first beach-club openings and the Spanish crowds all arrive in March; our events calendar has the dates.
Things to Do in Marbella in Winter
Winter is for the hills and the table rather than the beach. The town hall runs ten free guided walks between 25 October and 9 May, Ronda is about 75 minutes away by road, Sierra Nevada's ski slopes under three hours, and the theatre, restaurants and golf courses are at their easiest to book.
Walks, Golf and the White Villages
The town hall's Salidas a la Naturaleza programme runs ten walks, free except the Caminito del Rey at €12, with a free bus from Marbella and San Pedro; places open each Monday at 10:00 for the following outing. Routes include Sierra Blanca, Pico de Mijas and the Genal valley; the first, on 25 October, covers Nagüeles, the old Buenavista mine and Los Monjes, and last season's 500 places all filled. Ronda is 61 km by the A-397, about 75 minutes, and golf courses are open all year.
Ski in the Morning, Sea View at Dinner
Sierra Nevada, Europe's southernmost ski resort, is about 217 km from Marbella, under three hours by road. Its slopes top out at 3,300 metres, the resort lists more than 112 km of pistes, and the season usually runs from early December to late April. Weekdays avoid the Spanish holiday queues. It makes a long day out and back, or a night in the resort; for a companion, it is quoted as a day trip rather than by the hour.
Booking a Companion From November to March
Winter is the easiest season to book, at the same price as the rest of the year. Same-day bookings usually work and a particular companion is easier to secure than at any other time. Christmas and New Year's Eve are the exceptions: the price is the same, but the diary fills early.
Rates, Notice and the Festive Exception
An hour is €300 in central Marbella, on the Golden Mile and in Puerto Banús, in winter as in summer. For the festive fortnight we ask for two weeks' notice and book New Year's Eve in November. You pay her directly before the booking starts, by cash, bank transfer (to her or to the agency) or crypto; a booking made in advance, New Year's Eve included, carries a 25% deposit by transfer or crypto, with the balance paid to her at the start, and a same-day booking needs none.
The Bookings Winter Suits
Short days favour long evenings: a dinner date, a minimum of three hours and so from €900, at a table indoors or by a terrace heater. Villa stays in the hills are quieter still in winter; Benahavís is outside Marbella, so bookings with our Benahavís escorts carry a two-hour minimum, and an overnight, €3,000 to €4,000 depending on the companion and the length, saves the drive back down, since taxis are scarce up there at night. A ski day in Sierra Nevada is a travel booking, at €5,000 a day plus flights and hotel paid by the client.
