September in Marbella: What Changes After August, Week by Week

The change in Marbella after August is quick. Spain's own holidaymakers go home at the end of the month, and INE's hotel survey shows it: in September 2025 Spanish-resident guest-nights in Marbella's hotels fell 42% from August, while foreign guests fell only 17%. Is September a Good Time to Visit Marbella?

For most trips, yes. September keeps August's weather within a degree or two while the Spanish crowd goes home: hotel guest-nights fell 22% between August and September 2025, and the average room rate by a third, from €369 to €253. Lifeguards stay on duty all month.

Who Leaves, and Who Stays

August is Spain's holiday month, and its families leave in the last days of it: under Decreto 301/2009, Andalusian primary schools go back on 10 September, a Thursday in 2026. INE's hotel figures show Spanish-resident nights falling from 75,121 in August 2025 to 43,549 in September, while foreign guests went from 275,245 to 227,999. September is therefore an international month: foreign visitors took 84% of hotel nights, against 79% in August. INE also counted 90 hotels open, the most of the year.

September Weather: Still Summer, With Shorter Evenings

Marbella's September normals give 25.5°C by day and 18.9°C at night, about two degrees below August, with 30 mm of rain on fewer than three days. The sea averages 21.8°C. The biggest change is the light: sunset moves from 20:48 on 1 September to 20:05 on the 30th.

Heat, Rain and Light

At Málaga airport, AEMET's reference station, September averages 7.5 days of 30°C or more, against 20 in August, and 261 hours of sunshine, 8.7 a day. Clear days fall from 16.8 in August to 9.2, and thunderstorms return on about 1.2 days in the month; of September's 2.3 rain days at the airport, 0.7 bring 10 mm or more. The Sea: Warm Early, Cooling Late

The satellite average for September is 21.8°C, but the month runs downhill: early-September water is close to August's 23.4°C, and by the end it is nearer 20°C, within a monthly range of 19.8°C to 23.9°C. Lifeguards stay until 30 September, and the bathing season, with its dog ban and daytime fishing ban, runs to 15 October. For a swimming holiday, the first ten days are the safest bet. Ibiza's September average is 25.3°C on the same measure: Atlantic water entering through the Strait of Gibraltar keeps this corner of the Mediterranean cooler.

1 to 13 September: Starlite's Finale, Mijas and Madrid

The first fortnight still has a summer programme. Starlite closed its 2026 season with Manuel Carrasco on 4 September, Sotogrande's autumn polo began on the 3rd, Mijas Pueblo's feria ran from 7 to 12 September and Formula 1 raced in Madrid from 11 to 13 September.

Starlite's Last Night and the Autumn Polo

Starlite's 49th and last concert of 2026 in the Nagüeles quarry was Manuel Carrasco on Friday 4 September. In Sotogrande, 45 minutes west, the Copa San Enrique de Guadiaro ran from 3 to 6 September and the Copa Despedida from 10 to 13, with small crowds after August's Gold Cup; our polo calendar lists the autumn cups to 18 October. The Festival Internacional de Música brings piano recitals to Marbella in the first half of the month, and they were free to attend in 2025.

The Mijas Feria and the Madrid Grand Prix

Mijas Pueblo's fair peaks on 8 September, its patron's day, with the Virgen de la Peña procession at 21:00. The village is 36 km and about 35 minutes from Marbella, and the last bus down to Fuengirola leaves at 22:00, so plan a car or a driver; our Mijas feria guide has the programme. Formula 1's first Spanish Grand Prix on Madrid's new Madring circuit, 11 to 13 September, was 590 km away by road.

14 to 30 September: The Month Winds Down

The second half is quieter and cooler. From 14 September 2026 the Avanza airport coach ran 37 direct services a day; on the 30th the lifeguards stood down and the AP-7's summer toll ended; and by then the sun was setting at 20:05, three-quarters of an hour earlier than on the 1st.

The Airport Coach and the Last Lifeguards

Avanza's direct coach from Málaga airport costs from €6.48 and takes about 40 minutes, but it stops only at Marbella bus station, 1.6 km above the old town. From 14 September 2026 it ran 37 direct services a day, the first at 08:45 and the last at 23:59, down from 48 in the summer timetable; our airport transfer guide compares it with taxis and drivers. On the beaches, the 30th is the last day of daily lifeguard cover. After that, swimming is unsupervised, even though the dog ban and other bathing-season rules stay in force until 15 October.

Dates to Check Before Booking

Puerto Banús's marina charges its high-season berth rate, €150 a day for 15 metres, until 30 September, and its cheaper mid-season rate from 1 October, so the quay stays busy all month. Beach clubs end their seasons on their own dates from mid-September into October, so ask the club rather than assume. The Marbella International Film Festival moves too: the 2025 edition opened on 29 September, while 2026's runs from 7 to 12 October.

What September Costs Compared With August

Less on almost every line. Marbella's average hotel room rate fell from €369 in August 2025 to €253 in September, and from €332 to €235 a year earlier. Weekends stay busier than weekdays, the AP-7 keeps its summer toll to the 30th, and taxis keep the same tariff all year.

Hotels and the Weekend Effect

Rooms were 76% occupied in September 2025 against 83% in August, so the best-known hotels still fill at weekends. INE measures weekend occupancy separately: bed places were 64% taken on September 2025 weekends against 70% in August, while the monthly average across all days was 56%. Hotels barely cut their staff: INE counted 4,109 people working in Marbella's hotels in September 2025, against 4,432 in August. In practice the saving is largest midweek, when the same room and the same beach cost less and need less notice.

Tolls, Taxis and Getting Around

The AP-7 toll from Málaga to Marbella is €9.25 until 30 September and €5.70 from 1 October; Marbella to Estepona costs €6.25, falling to €3.85. The summer rate returns over Easter. Marbella's taxi tariff does not change with the season: €3.79 plus €1.12 a kilometre by day, €4.64 plus €1.41 at night and at weekends. What changes is the wait, which is shorter than in August at the beach-club and marina ranks.

Early or Late September?

Early September for swimming and events: warmer water, Starlite's finale, the Mijas feria and the polo. Late September for quiet and value: fewer people, cooler evenings, and lifeguards still on duty to the 30th. In 2025 the film festival opened on 29 September, so check whether it falls inside your dates.

The First Half: Summer With Space

Until about the 15th, the sea is still near its peak, sunset comes after 20:28 and the evening programme is full: Starlite to the 4th, the Mijas feria to the 12th and Sotogrande's Copa Despedida to the 13th. Andalusian primary schools are back from the 10th, so the beaches thin during the week. The 8th is also a local holiday in Mijas, the feast of its patron. This is the fortnight for a beach holiday, a boat afternoon or long dinners outside.

The Second Half: Quiet Beaches, Earlier Evenings

From the 15th the coast is at its emptiest for summer weather: afternoons still reach the mid-20s, but the sun sets at about 20:20 by the 20th and the water drifts towards 21°C. It suits couples, golfers starting their season and anyone who wants a restaurant table at a day's notice. Booking a Companion in September

Our price is the same all year, but September is easier on availability than July and August. Two or three days' notice is usually enough, and a week for a named companion on a Saturday. It is the easiest month of the summer to book well.

Price and Notice in September

An hour is €300 in Marbella, on the Golden Mile and in Puerto Banús alike, and the same in September as in August. Outside Marbella, bookings with our Estepona escorts, 25 to 30 minutes west, carry a two-hour minimum. You pay her directly before the booking starts, by cash, bank transfer (to her or to the agency) or crypto; a booking made in advance carries a 25% deposit by transfer or crypto, with the balance paid to her at the start, and a same-day booking needs none. The Bookings September Suits

September is the month for a yacht day: charters are easier to find than in August, the sea is warm and a four-hour half day is €1,200 at €300 an hour, with the boat and the food paid separately. A terrace dinner date, a minimum of three hours and so from €900, works all month, with sunset still after 20:00. If your plans depend on a boat, tell us the marina and boarding time.
