Clients planning a day at sea with one of our Marbella escorts tend to ask for a motor yacht by reflex, because that is what lines the quay in Puerto Banús. Often it is the wrong boat for the day they describe. A charter here is mostly spent stopped in a bay, and there a catamaran's width counts for more than an engine's horsepower. This page compares the two hulls on space, speed, stability and the days each one suits, using two real boats as the yardstick: a Lagoon 42 and an Azimut Atlantis 45. Two boats of similar length show the gap. The Lagoon 42 catamaran is 13.22 metres long and 7.68 wide, with two 57 hp engines and 94 square metres of sail. The Azimut Atlantis 45 is 14.60 metres long and 4.20 wide, with two 480 hp engines and a 30-knot cruising speed.

What the Numbers Mean on the Day

The beam is the figure that matters at anchor: 7.68 metres against 4.20 makes the catamaran almost twice as wide on a shorter hull. The motor yacht's 960 horsepower matters only while it is moving, and on a typical Marbella charter that is the smaller part of the day. Its 1,000-litre tank tells you the rest: it is built to run fast and far, and it burns diesel accordingly. One caution on the catamaran's berths: twelve is a sleeping count, not a comfortable day-sail number for a couple who want privacy.

Which Boat Has More Room for a Group?

The catamaran, by a wide margin. Its deck spans two hulls, so cockpit, saloon and foredeck sit on one broad platform, and the Lagoon 42 is certified for 12 people offshore. A sport cruiser of similar length, such as the Atlantis 45, puts its space into a cockpit, a sunpad and a bathing platform.

Living on One Level

On a cruising catamaran you step from the bathing steps to the cockpit to the saloon without climbing, and the cockpit sits under a fixed roof, which is the shade a July day depends on. Cabins sit down in the hulls, one or two each side, so a guest can change after a swim behind a closed door rather than in a shared heads. Most cruising cats also have netting stretched between the bows, the best place on the boat to lie in the sun once anchored. For eight or ten people, nobody has to take turns for a seat.

Where the Motor Yacht Wins

A 4.20-metre beam still gives a good cockpit, a foredeck sunpad and a platform at water level for swimming, and the interior of a modern motor yacht is often more finished than a charter catamaran's. What it lacks is width: in shade, a group of eight is shoulder to shoulder. Seasickness: Which Hull Moves Less?

At anchor, the catamaran. Two hulls resist the side-to-side roll that sets a monohull rocking in a swell, and most of a Marbella charter is spent at anchor. Underway in a short chop neither is perfect; the motor yacht simply gets the crossing over faster, and a gyro stabiliser, where fitted, damps its roll at rest.

At Anchor Off Marbella

The easterly Levante can raise a short chop on a clear day, and a swell can wrap into an anchorage hours after the wind has dropped. On a monohull that means glasses sliding and a slow roll that wears down anyone susceptible. The NHS advice is to sit in the middle of the boat, watch the horizon, avoid heavy meals and alcohol shortly before or during the trip, and try ginger, with tablets and patches from a pharmacist. Ask About a Gyro Stabiliser

If you want the motor yacht and have a guest who dreads the swell, ask whether the boat has a gyro stabiliser. Seakeeper, for one, sells its units on the promise of motion control at rest and underway, which is exactly what you want at anchor. Not every charter boat is fitted, and an operator who says yes should be able to name the model. Ask the skipper, too, which way the wind is forecast: an anchorage in the lee of the land is calmer on any hull.

Speed and Range: How Far Each Boat Gets in a Day

Estepona and Cabopino are each about 10 nautical miles from Puerto Banús: twenty minutes at the motor yacht's 30 knots, around an hour and a half for a catamaran under engine. Sotogrande, 19 miles west, is a 40-minute run by motor yacht and close to three hours by catamaran, each way.

Distances are straight-line nautical miles between harbours, so allow a little more on the water, and times assume a steady speed in calm conditions.

When Speed Matters, and When It Does Not

Speed matters when the plan has a destination: lunch ashore in Sotogrande, a table at a beach club in Estepona, or a fixed time back in Banús for dinner. On a half day of four or five hours, the catamaran's practical radius is the 10 miles to Estepona or Cabopino and back, with a couple of hours at anchor between. Speed does not matter when the plan is a bay twenty minutes away, and that describes most of the charters we arrange. What Changes the Bill

Distance, more than the boat's day rate. A motor yacht planing at 30 knots on 960 horsepower burns far more diesel per mile than a catamaran on 114, so a run to Sotogrande and back costs much more than a day at anchor. Fuel is normally quoted on top of the day rate, so confirm it in writing.

Fuel and the Shape of the Day

Anchoring burns almost nothing on either boat, so the cheapest motor-yacht day is a short run to a bay and a long stay. The expensive day is a fast run west and back with the engines working throughout. Ask the operator for a fuel estimate for your actual plan, not a generic day, and have it written into the confirmation, as our charter booking guide explains with the other clauses worth checking.

Beam, Berths and Where the Boat Lives

Marinas price berths by length and beam. In Puerto Banús's 2026 tariff, the 35-metre category allows 7 metres of beam, less than a Lagoon 42's 7.68, and oversize beams are quoted case by case by customer service. So a catamaran offered for a Banús charter may well be based elsewhere on the coast. Ask where it sails from: if it has to come round from another marina, either the pick-up point or a repositioning charge will appear in the quote.

Which Boat Suits Which Day?

Match the boat to the plan. A swim-and-lunch day at anchor, a group of eight or more, or a guest who dreads the swell: catamaran. Lunch in Sotogrande, a fast run to Estepona, or an evening return to Banús where the boat is part of the occasion: motor yacht.

Catamaran Days

The classic is east to Cabopino and the Artola dunes, an hour and a half at catamaran pace, then anchor outside the bathing strip and swim from the steps. The sea off Marbella peaks at about 23.4°C in August, so late summer is when hours in the water are comfortable. Lunch is cold and simple, eaten under the cockpit roof. West to Sotogrande for lunch at the marina and back by six, which only works at 30 knots. A quick run to Estepona for a table ashore. What to Send Us

The boat's name and type, the marina and pontoon, boarding and return times, how many guests are aboard and the plan for the day. We pass her passport details to the operator for the passenger list.
