Christmas in Marbella: Traditions, Lights and What Is Open

Spanish Christmas catches out most northern Europeans. The big meal is on the evening of the 24th, not the 25th; Boxing Day is an ordinary working day; and the presents arrive on 6 January, brought by the Three Kings, who reach Marbella the evening before with a parade and 25,000 kilos of sweets. It is also a fortnight when an escort agency in Marbella is asked for very different evenings, from a black-tie gala to a quiet lunch. Christmas in Marbella runs from Nochebuena on 24 December to Reyes on 6 January: book Christmas Eve dinner in November, expect the 25th, 1st and 6th to be public holidays, and stay for the parade on the 5th.

When Is Christmas in Marbella? The 2026–27 Calendar

The season runs from the 8 December holiday to Reyes on 6 January. The dates that matter are the Christmas Eve dinner on the 24th, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and Day, the Three Kings' parade on the evening of 5 January, and the 6th, when Spanish children open their presents.

The Fortnight, Day by Day

El Gordo and the Innocents

On the morning of 22 December the country stops for the Christmas lottery, the Sorteo de Navidad, with the winning numbers sung live on television by schoolchildren. A tenth of a ticket, the décimo, costs €20, and the top prize, El Gordo, pays €400,000 per décimo; the 2026 draw has 205 series of 100,000 numbers, according to the Spanish Christmas Lottery entry. Six days later, the Día de los Inocentes is Spain's April Fool's Day, so treat that day's headlines with suspicion.

What Does Marbella Do for Christmas?

It lights the old town and the main avenues, builds nativity scenes, and holds two community events worth a visit: Cáritas's Christmas bazaar at the Palacio de Congresos, with more than 100 stalls and an ice rink in 2025, and neighbourhood zambombas in San Pedro. It is a local Christmas rather than a staged one.

The Lights and the Belenes

The municipal lights hang across the old town's lanes and the main avenues, and the walk from Plaza de los Naranjos down to the Alameda park is the best of them; our old town by night guide maps the route. Nativity scenes, belenes, are taken seriously here: churches, associations and families build them, and the town hall ran its belenes competition again in 2025. In San Pedro, the El Cruce association unveiled a handmade belén that year, enlarged with its neighbours' help.

The Cáritas Christmas Bazaar

The biggest Christmas market in town is a charity one. In 2025 the 20th Bazar de Navidad de Cáritas filled the Palacio de Ferias y Congresos from Thursday 11 to Sunday 14 December, open from 12:00 to 21:00 for a €2 entry, with more than 100 stalls of decorations, crafts, books and furniture, seven food outlets and, for the first time, an ice rink. The previous edition raised €250,000 for local families, and the 2025 programme included a ten-metre roscón. 2025 was its 20th edition; watch for the 2026 dates.

Zambombas in San Pedro

A zambomba is an Andalusian Christmas gathering built around carols, the friction drum that gives it its name and something sweet. San Pedro's Navidad entre Vecinos programme, which ran from 5 to 21 December in 2025, ended with two: the El Cruce association's on the 20th, with live music and homemade pestiños, and the Julio Romero de Torres association's on the 21st, with dance schools and churros. They are neighbourhood parties open to everyone, and nothing on the Golden Mile feels as local.

How Does Christmas Eve Work in Marbella?

Nochebuena is the centre of Spanish Christmas: a long family dinner on the 24th, often followed by midnight Mass, the Misa del Gallo. It is a working day, but shops close early and many independent restaurants either shut or serve one set menu. Hotels run prepaid galas, so book any table in November.

How the Night Runs

Spanish families eat late and long on the 24th, with seafood, roast lamb or suckling pig, then turrón and polvorones, and restaurant staff go home to their own tables. That is why the old town's family-run places close or offer a single sitting, and why the hotels' gala dinners sell out. Sunset on Christmas Eve is at about 18:08, so there is time for a walk under the lights and a drink before dinner. What Christmas Eve Dinner Costs

The benchmark is Marbella Club, whose 2025 Christmas Eve gala started at 8pm and cost €410 a head: foie gras terrine with quince, lobster salad, pumpkin soup with duck liver, sole stuffed with prawn in champagne sauce, beef tenderloin with porcini and a Guanaja chocolate fondant with turrón ice cream, with Remelluri Reserva and Comte de Montaigne champagne, according to its festive menus. Christmas Day: Lunch Is the Event

25 December is a public holiday, and the day revolves around a long lunch. Marbella Club charged €380 a head for its 2025 Christmas lunch and €310 for a buffet; La Sala in Puerto Banús lists a British-style 2026 menu at €130 plus 10% service. Boxing Day is an ordinary day here.

Club Lunch or British Roast

The two published menus show the coast's split personality. Marbella Club's 2025 lunch began with a cocktail at the Summer Bar at 1:30pm, then Christmas consommé, sea bass with caviar sauce and stuffed turkey with bread sauce, at €380; its Christmas buffet from 1pm, with Ruinart on arrival, cost €310. La Sala's 2026 Christmas Day menu is resolutely British: lobster and king prawn cocktail, roast turkey with pigs in blankets and duck-fat potatoes, Christmas pudding with brandy cream, at €130 plus 10% service, half price for children under ten.

Boxing Day Is a Working Day

In 2026 only Catalonia keeps 26 December as a public holiday, so in Marbella shops, banks and offices reopen; in 2026 it falls on a Saturday anyway. Christmas Day itself is a Friday this year, which turns 25 to 27 December into a long weekend and the busiest stretch of the fortnight for restaurant tables. New Year's Day is also a Friday, so the pattern repeats a week later. Book Christmas lunch when you book Christmas Eve dinner.

What Is Open From 24 December to 6 January?

Restaurants, hotels, golf courses and most bars stay open throughout. Shops and banks close on the public holidays, 25 December, 1 January and 6 January, and close early on the 24th and 31st. Most beach clubs are shut for the winter, and the sales traditionally start on 7 January.

Holidays, Early Closing and the Sales

The national holidays of the season are 8 and 25 December, 1 January and 6 January. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are working days with early closing, so do any shopping by lunchtime. Large shopping centres open on some holidays and not on others, so check the specific centre rather than assuming. The rebajas, the winter sales, traditionally begin on 7 January, the day after Reyes, which in 2027 is a Thursday. Beach clubs mostly close from October to Easter, so the seafront at Christmas belongs to walkers and the chiringuitos that stay open.

Sun by Day, Dark by Six

December is the darkest month but rarely a grey one: AEMET's 1981–2010 averages for Málaga airport give it 160 hours of sunshine, an average high of 17.5°C and a low of 8.9°C. The sun sets at about 18:08 on Christmas Eve and rises at about 08:28, so long lunches on a terrace work and late dinners need a coat. The Week Between Christmas and New Year

The quietest week for visitors and the busiest for residents: second-home owners and Spanish families fill the old town while the beach clubs are closed. It is the week for long lunches, golf, a day inland and, on the 31st, the one night of the season that sells out weeks ahead.

What to Do in the Quiet Days

Use the mild light for what summer is too hot for: golf in the morning, the seafront paseo at midday, or the drive to Ronda, about an hour inland, where our Ronda wine day begins. The old town's restaurants are at their best with a local crowd. In our experience, outside the 24th, the 25th and the 31st, a table for two between Christmas and New Year rarely needs more than a day's notice.

New Year's Eve, in Brief

Nochevieja is the exception to the quiet: hotel galas from 8pm, twelve grapes at midnight to the chimes from Madrid's Puerta del Sol, then parties until dawn. Prices run up to €1,270 a head, Marbella Club's 2025 figure; our own rate is unchanged, but the night needs booking in November. Reyes: The Three Kings Close the Season

On the evening of 5 January the Three Kings parade through Marbella and San Pedro throwing sweets; in 2026 about thirty floats handed out 25,000 kilos across the municipality. The 6th is a public holiday for presents and roscón, and on the 7th the sales begin and Christmas is over.

The Cabalgata on 5 January

The usual pattern: the Kings arrive by boat at Marbella's marina, their Royal Guard parades through the centre a day or two before, and the cabalgata sets off at 6pm. The 2025 route ran from Plaza Monseñor Rodrigo Bocanegra, known as the Pirulí, along Avenida Ramón y Cajal to Avenida Severo Ochoa, with 15 floats in Marbella and 12 in San Pedro. Nueva Andalucía gets a morning visit, with the Kings landing at Puerto Banús at 10am in 2025 and touring the district in vintage cars. Ramón y Cajal is the place to stand.

Rain Moves the Kings

Two years running, the weather has rearranged the programme. In January 2025 a rain forecast brought both cabalgatas forward a day, to Saturday 4 January, cancelling the boat arrival and folding the Royal Guard into the parade. In January 2026 the Royal Guard's parade moved from Sunday 4 to Saturday 3 January at noon, starting and finishing at Plaza de la Iglesia, though the cabalgatas went ahead on the 5th. Presents, Roscón and the 6th

Spanish children open their main presents on the morning of 6 January, and the day ends with roscón de Reyes, a ring of sweet bread topped with candied fruit, with a small figure and a dried bean baked inside: find the figure and you wear the paper crown, find the bean and you pay for next year's. The 6th is a public holiday, so shops are shut; in 2027 it falls on a Wednesday.

Which Format for Which Day

A dinner date of three hours or more, from €900, covers a Christmas lunch that starts at 1:30pm or a quiet dinner on the 26th. A gala on the 24th, with drinks at 8pm and dinner running past midnight, is overnight territory: 10 to 12 hours at €3,000–€4,000 depending on the companion. Changes and Payment

Christmas plans change, and our terms allow for it: changes and cancellations are free until 24 hours before a dinner date and 48 hours before an overnight, as our cancellation guide sets out, and a delayed flight is never charged. On payment, you pay her directly before the booking starts, in cash, by bank transfer or in crypto; a booking made in advance takes a 25 per cent deposit by transfer or crypto, to her or to us, with the balance paid to her at the start.
