Key Takeaways:
  • Parasailing is passive and scenic — you are towed behind a boat under a canopy, about ten to fifteen minutes airborne
  • Flyboarding is active and genuinely difficult; expect the first fifteen minutes to be spent falling over
  • Both run roughly €60–€120 per person for a session
  • Parasailing suits anyone; flyboarding requires reasonable fitness and core strength
  • For the money, a parasail gives a better view and a flyboard gives a better story

Every beach on this coast sells the same two adrenaline activities, and they are almost entirely different propositions despite costing about the same. Parasailing is passive, easy and genuinely scenic — you are lifted behind a boat and see the whole coast from a couple of hundred feet. Flyboarding is active, difficult and physically demanding, and most first-timers spend a good portion of their session in the water. Knowing which you are actually buying prevents a lot of disappointment. Parasailing is a passive ten to fifteen minute scenic flight behind a boat, while flyboarding is a genuinely difficult active session where beginners spend the first fifteen minutes falling in — both at roughly €60–€120 per person. Our watersports calendar covers conditions.

Parasailing: What It Actually Is

You are strapped into a harness under a parachute canopy and towed behind a boat, lifted a couple of hundred feet above the water for ten to fifteen minutes. It requires nothing from you at all. The view is the product.

How It Works

You take off from and land back on the boat's platform in most modern operations — you do not usually get wet. The boat accelerates, the canopy lifts, and the winch pays out. It is smooth, quiet once you are up, and considerably less alarming than it looks from the beach.

Spanish coastal regulation excludes powered craft from a marked zone near the shore to protect swimmers, and it applies across the Costa del Sol.

The View

The whole coastline, the Sierra Blanca behind Marbella, and on a clear day across the strait toward Morocco. It is the best aerial view of this coast short of a helicopter, at a hundredth of the price. Tandem and triple harnesses mean you can go up together.

Who Can Do It

Almost anyone — there is no skill involved and minimal physical requirement, with weight limits at both ends being the main constraint. It suits people who would not consider anything more demanding, which makes it the more broadly appealing of the two.

Flyboarding: What It Actually Is

A board connected by a hose to a jet-ski engine, which forces water through foot jets to lift you above the surface. It is genuinely difficult and it is a workout. Expect to fall in repeatedly.

The Learning Curve

Most people spend the first ten to fifteen minutes of a thirty-minute session in the water. Balance comes from the core and the ankles, and it is unlike anything else — there is no useful transferable skill. By the end of a first session most people can hover a metre or two above the surface, which is the realistic goal.

The Physical Demand

Genuinely a workout — core, legs and a good deal of getting back onto the board. Anyone with a back or knee problem should think carefully, and it is not a sensible activity after a long lunch. Operators brief thoroughly and control the throttle from the jet ski, which limits how badly it can go.

The Payoff

The twenty seconds where it works are genuinely extraordinary, and the video the operator sells you afterwards is the reason most people book it. It is a story rather than a view — the opposite of parasailing.

What They Cost

Both run roughly €60–€120 per person for a session, with parasailing typically ten to fifteen minutes airborne and flyboarding twenty to thirty minutes in the water. Comparable prices, very different products.

Typical Rates

ActivityDurationPrice
Parasailing, solo10–15 min airborne€60 – €100
Parasailing, tandem10–15 min€100 – €160 for two
Flyboard, 20 minPlus briefing€60 – €90
Flyboard, 30 minPlus briefing€90 – €130

Which Is Better Value

Depends entirely on what you want. Fifteen minutes of the best view on the coast, or thirty minutes of learning something difficult. Against a jet ski at €120 for an hour, both are reasonable; against a paddleboard at €20, neither is cheap.

Where They Operate

Beach operators along the Golden Mile, around Puerto Banús and on the eastern beaches. Both are seasonal, running from roughly Easter to October. Widely available in summer.

The Beaches

Concessions along the main beaches, most visible from the sand. The eastern beaches toward Elviria are less congested, which makes for a better session — the Golden Mile and Puerto Banús stretches are busier with swimmers and boat traffic.

The Season

Easter to October, tracking the beach club season. Outside those months the operators are gone. Book a day ahead in August; walk-up is usually fine in June or September.

Conditions and Safety

Both are wind-dependent and operators cancel readily in poor conditions. Morning is calmer, and neither should be attempted after drinking. Three practical points.

Wind

Parasailing needs some wind and not too much; flyboarding wants flat water. The easterly Levante disrupts both. Operators cancel in genuinely poor conditions and will reschedule, which is a good sign rather than an inconvenience — the ones who do not are the ones to avoid.

Go in the Morning

The daily sea breeze builds through the day on this coast, so flat water is a morning phenomenon — the same pattern our paddleboarding post describes. For flyboarding in particular, a morning session is materially easier than an afternoon one.

Not After Lunch

Operators will refuse, and flyboarding in particular is genuinely physical. Given how many of these bookings happen mid-afternoon at a beach club, it is a practical point — do it before lunch rather than after. Our beach club post covers the day's usual shape.

Which Should You Book?

Parasailing if you want the view and want it to be easy. Flyboarding if you want to learn something and do not mind falling in. Neither if you are prone to seasickness in a chop. A simple decision.

For Two People

Parasailing tandem, without much question — you go up together, it costs about the same as two flyboard sessions, and it is a shared experience rather than one person watching the other fall over. For an afternoon with a companion it is the obvious choice of the two.

For a Group

Flyboarding, because watching each other is a substantial part of the entertainment and everyone gets a turn. It works well as a group activity in a way parasailing does not, and the videos are the point. Our pool party post covers the rest of a group beach day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is parasailing like?

Passive and scenic — you are strapped into a harness under a canopy and towed behind a boat, lifted a couple of hundred feet for ten to fifteen minutes. Modern operations take off and land from the boat platform, so you do not usually get wet.

Is flyboarding hard?

Genuinely, yes. Most people spend the first ten to fifteen minutes of a thirty-minute session in the water, and by the end a first-timer can typically hover a metre or two above the surface. It is a real workout for the core and legs.

How much do they cost?

Both roughly €60–€120 per person. Parasailing is €60–€100 solo and €100–€160 tandem for two; flyboarding is €60–€90 for twenty minutes and €90–€130 for thirty, plus a briefing in each case.

What is the best time of day?

Morning. The daily sea breeze builds through the day on this coast, and flat water is a morning phenomenon — which matters for flyboarding in particular. It is also the sensible time given that neither should be attempted after drinking.

Which is better for two people?

Parasailing tandem. You go up together, it costs about the same as two flyboard sessions, and it is a shared experience rather than one person watching the other fall over. Flyboarding works better as a group activity where everyone takes a turn.

Building a Day on the Beach?

Morning activity, lunch on the sand, and the afternoon by the water is a genuinely good day. Tell us the shape and we will suggest companions who enjoy a day out, and quote it as one figure.
