Key Takeaways:
  • Björn Borg opened the club with the hotel in 1979, and Wimbledon champion Manolo Santana ran it from 1983
  • The resort lists 8 clay courts, 1 plexipave court and 8 padel courts, all floodlit, plus a centre court seating 2,500
  • It has staged Davis Cup ties in 1989 and 2018, a WTA event from 2009 to 2011 and a one-off ATP 250 in 2021
  • Courts are open to non-guests through Playtomic, 08:00 to 21:00 daily; the resort does not publish 2026 court or lesson prices
  • The club sits on the Golden Mile inside Marbella municipality, so an evening companion booking afterwards follows the normal 1-hour minimum at €300

At 19:30 in September the floodlights come on over the clay at Puente Romano, and the courts nearest the Golden Mile boulevard fill with people still in their office clothes an hour earlier. Some are hotel guests. Many are not. The club is the sporting end of the resort we cover in our Puente Romano insider guide, and it sits in the stretch our Golden Mile escorts page describes. The Puente Romano Tennis Club is a 1979 club opened by Björn Borg, with eight floodlit clay courts, a plexipave court and eight padel courts, and in 2026 a visitor who is not staying at the resort can still book a court through Playtomic.

What Is the Puente Romano Tennis Club?

The Puente Romano Tennis Club is the tennis and padel club inside Puente Romano Beach Resort on Marbella's Golden Mile. It opened in 1979 with the hotel under Björn Borg, was managed by Manolo Santana from 1983, and is affiliated to the Spanish tennis federation. It is open to resort guests and to outside players. Its address is Conjunto Jardín Andaluz 4, at the inland side of the resort.

Borg, 1979 and a Hotel Built Around a Club

Puente Romano became a hotel in 1979, and the tennis club opened the same year with Björn Borg as its first manager, at the height of his run of five straight Wimbledon titles. The resort's own tennis and padel page still leads with that name. For a Golden Mile hotel in 1979 this was the marketing: the Marbella Club had the princes, Puente Romano had the best tennis player on earth.

The Santana Years and the Names on the Wall

Manolo Santana, Spain's first Wimbledon men's champion in 1966, took over the running of the club in 1983. Under him it became the place touring players came to practise and play exhibitions, and the club still names Boris Becker, John McEnroe, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray among the players who have used its courts. The club's Wikipedia entry keeps the event record short and factual.

How Many Courts, and Which Surface Should You Book?

The resort lists eight clay courts, one plexipave hard court and eight glass padel courts, all floodlit, plus a centre court with seating for 2,500 that doubles as a concert venue. Older listings, including Playtomic's club page, still show two plexipave and four padel courts; the resort's own figures are the current ones. Book clay unless your knees or your flight home say otherwise.

The Court List, Side by Side

CourtNumberBest for
Red clay8, floodlitSingles and doubles, slower rallies, easier on joints
Plexipave (hard)1, floodlitPlayers preparing for a hard-court tournament
Padel (glass)8, floodlitFour players, mixed levels, a shorter session
Centre court1, 2,500 seatsTournaments, exhibitions and concerts

The figure of 2,500 seats comes from the resort. In practice visitors play on the eight clay courts and the padel courts, and the centre court is for events.

Clay or Padel: What We Tell Clients

Clay is the reason to come. It is slower than the acrylic most British club players know, the ball sits up, and points last longer, which is either a pleasure or a shock at 32°C. Bring proper clay shoes with a herringbone sole; running shoes slide and the staff will notice the lines you leave. Padel is the better choice for a mixed group or a business foursome: the glass walls keep the ball in play, beginners rally inside ten minutes, and an hour and a half of padel is plenty. If you have a regular partner and a week, book clay every day at the same hour.

Davis Cup, a WTA Event and a One-Off ATP 250

The club has hosted Davis Cup ties in 1989 and 2018, the WTA's Andalucia Tennis Experience from 2009 to 2011, the Marbella Tennis Open in 2018 and 2019, and the ATP 250 Andalucía Open in April 2021, which Pablo Carreño Busta won on home clay.

Spain Against Great Britain, and Three WTA Champions

The most recent Davis Cup visit was the World Group first round in February 2018, Spain against Great Britain on outdoor clay. Cameron Norrie came from two sets down to beat Roberto Bautista Agut on the opening day, but Spain won the doubles and took the tie 3–1. Before that, the Andalucia Tennis Experience brought the WTA to the club: Jelena Janković won in 2009, Flavia Pennetta in 2010 and Victoria Azarenka in 2011, after which the 2012 edition was cancelled.

Two Weeks of Tour Tennis in April 2021

In 2021 the calendar had gaps after the pandemic, and Marbella filled one. A Challenger event ran at the club the week before, then the 2021 Andalucía Open, an ATP 250 on clay from 5 to 11 April with a total prize fund of €408,800, became the fourth ATP tournament in Spain that year alongside Madrid, Barcelona and Mallorca. Carreño Busta beat Jaume Munar 6–1, 2–6, 6–4 in the final; the event ran on a single-year licence and has not returned. Check the club's events calendar instead; junior and club tournaments run through the year.

Can Non-Guests Book a Court at Puente Romano?

Yes. The resort says the club is open to guests and non-guests, and outside players book courts through Playtomic, the Spanish booking app the club uses. The club opens every day from 08:00 to 21:00. Resort guests can also book through the concierge, which is easier when you want a coach on the same slot. The club's telephone and email are on its own site, tenis.puenteromano.com.

Playtomic, the Concierge and the Night-Before Rule

Download Playtomic, search for Puente Romano, choose tennis or padel and the slot, and pay in the app. Resort and Nobu Hotel guests can do the same or ask the concierge, who will also arrange a coach or a partner. Our Nobu Hotel Marbella guide covers what Nobu guests share with the main resort. The one rule we give every client: in July and August, book the 08:00 and post-19:00 slots the night before. They go first, because nobody wants the clay at 14:00.

What a Court and a Lesson Cost in 2026

The resort does not publish a 2026 rate card for court hire, lessons or membership on its website, and the Playtomic listing shows a live price per slot rather than a fixed tariff. Treat any figure you find on a third-party site as out of date until the app or the club confirms it. The club does offer membership, with access to member events, and it is aimed at residents rather than visitors. For a stay of a week or two, pay per court; the arithmetic never favours membership for a visitor.

Coaching, Clinics and the Junior Academy

The club offers private and group lessons in tennis and padel, a winter tennis school, summer programmes and a junior academy run in ten-week courses with video analysis. Coaches are certified by Spain's RPT professional register and speak English, Spanish, German and Russian, according to the resort. A private lesson is the quickest way to get a good court at a good hour.

Private Lessons and Group Sessions for Adults

For a visitor, the private lesson is the useful product. An hour with a coach on clay sorts out footwork in a way a week of social doubles will not, and the coach books the court for you. Padel lessons are popular with beginners from the UK, where the sport is newer; a coach will have a group of four rallying properly in one session. Prices are quoted on request, not published, so ask before the lesson rather than at the end of it.

The Kids School, the Gym and the Pro Shop

Children are well served. The Kids School runs Monday to Friday from 17:00 to 19:00 and on Saturday mornings, in quarterly programmes, with a junior academy built around ten-week courses for beginners to competition players. Next to the courts there is a fitness centre with TechnoGym equipment that opens at 07:00, a massage room, sauna and Turkish bath, a pro shop for balls, strings, grips and forgotten shoes, and the Lagom café. The Six Senses spa is a separate part of the resort; we will cover it on its own.

Best Hours to Play, Month by Month, and What to Wear

From June to September play at 08:00 or after 19:00 under the floodlights; the middle of the day is for the pool. From October to May the clay is pleasant all day, and late morning is best in winter, when the courts dry out. The club closes at 21:00, so the last slot starts at 20:00. Book the same slot every day if you want the same partners.

The Season, Hour by Hour

  • July and August: the 08:00 slot, then nothing until 19:00. The floodlit 19:00 and 20:00 slots are the most wanted in the year.
  • June and September: early morning or evening still wins, but 10:00 is playable in the shade of the stands.
  • October and November: the best tennis months. Warm, dry, and the clay plays true all day.
  • December to February: late morning, once the overnight damp has gone from the clay; bring a layer for the evening.
  • March to May: any hour, with Easter week as busy as summer.

Dress, Shoes and What to Bring

The club does not publish a formal dress code, but this is a resort tennis club, not a public park. Proper tennis kit, a shirt rather than a vest, and clay-court shoes are the norm; the pro shop sells shoes if you forgot them. The club and the resort sit next to the Golden Mile boulevard, so you can walk in from a Golden Mile hotel or take a taxi; our piece on getting around Marbella without a car covers ordering one back.

From the Last Point to Dinner: Puente Romano After 20:00

A 19:00 slot ends at 20:00 or 20:30, which leaves time to shower, change and walk to La Plaza for a 21:30 table. The resort's restaurants, bars and late clubs are all within a few minutes on foot, so a tennis evening rarely needs a taxi until the end of the night. Our insider guide covers each venue properly; here is the one-line version.

The Evening, One Line Each

  • La Plaza: the restaurant square, with Nobu, COYA, Cipriani, GAIA and Leña; book a terrace table.
  • Sea Grill: the beachfront grill, for a quieter dinner by the sand.
  • Bar La Plaza: 18:00 to 03:00, the obvious place for a post-match drink.
  • COYA Club and NYX: the late nights, at weekends.
  • The beachfront walk: 500 metres east to the Marbella Club, covered in our beachfront walk guide.

If You Want to Leave the Resort

Marbella old town is about ten minutes by taxi and Puerto Banús roughly the same in the other direction, outside the evening rush. For a table away from the hotel crowd, our restaurants for a date list is a good start. If you have a membership elsewhere and want a quieter room for a nightcap, read our note on private members' clubs in Marbella.

After the Match: Booking a Marbella Escort for the Evening

Keep the club and the evening apart. Finish, shower and meet your companion at your room, villa or a restaurant, not at the courts. Puente Romano is inside Marbella municipality, so the 1-hour minimum applies at €300 an hour, and she usually arrives 25 to 30 minutes after we confirm. A dinner date is what most clients choose after a late slot.

Where to Meet, and Where Not To

Not courtside. The club is a sports venue full of regulars and their coaches, and nothing about it needs to involve your evening. A guest receiving a visitor in a Golden Mile suite is unremarkable, and the resort's lanes mean there is no grand lobby to cross on the way to most rooms. If you would rather start at a restaurant, tell us the table and the time and she will meet you there. Our Golden Mile outcalls page covers the strip's hotels, and the guide to Marbella escorts covers how a booking works from the first message.

Timing and What It Costs

A 19:00 court, a shower and a 21:00 start is the usual shape. One hour is €300 and two hours €600; a dinner date runs at least three hours, so from €900, and an overnight is €3,000–€4,000 depending on the companion and the length. You pay her taxi to the booking. Prices do not change at weekends, in summer or on a tournament week, but availability on a Saturday in August does tighten, so message us in the afternoon rather than from the changing room.

Payment, Changes and the Tennis Question

Payment goes to the companion before the booking starts, in cash, by bank transfer or in crypto; we do not take cards, and our page on how payment works has the detail. A 25% deposit applies only to bookings made in advance, not same-day ones. A dinner date can be changed or cancelled free until 24 hours before; the cancellation guide covers the rest. Some clients ask for a companion to play a set first. We do not promise that; ask us, and we will tell you honestly whether anyone free that week plays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play tennis at Puente Romano if I am not staying at the hotel?

Yes. The resort says its tennis club is open to guests and non-guests, and outside players book tennis and padel courts through the Playtomic app. The club opens every day from 08:00 to 21:00, and in summer the early and evening slots fill first, so book the night before.

Who founded the Puente Romano Tennis Club?

Björn Borg opened and managed the club when the hotel opened in 1979, and the Spanish Wimbledon champion Manolo Santana took over its running in 1983. Since then it has staged Davis Cup ties, a WTA tournament from 2009 to 2011 and an ATP 250 event in 2021.

How many padel courts does Puente Romano have?

The resort currently lists eight floodlit glass padel courts alongside eight clay tennis courts and one plexipave court. Some older listings, including the club's Playtomic page, still show four padel courts and two plexipave courts, so trust the resort's own figures.

How much does it cost to hire a court at Puente Romano?

The resort does not publish a 2026 price list for court hire or lessons. Outside players see the live price for each slot in Playtomic before paying, and guests can ask the concierge. Coaching is quoted on request, so confirm the rate before the lesson starts.

What is the best time of year to play tennis in Marbella?

October and November, then March to May. The clay plays well all day and the heat is gone. In July and August play at 08:00 or under floodlights after 19:00, and in winter choose late morning, once the overnight damp has dried off the courts.
