- Four categories: beach clubs, golf and tennis clubs, hotel resident clubs, and genuinely private residential estates
- Beach club membership is the accessible end — seasonal cards buying priority and rates rather than exclusivity
- Golf memberships are the serious commitment, with joining fees and annual dues
- Residential estate clubs like La Zagaleta cannot be joined at all without buying or renting property there
- Almost every category admits guests of members — which is the practical route in for a visitor
Marbella has more private clubs per square kilometre than anywhere else in Spain, and they range from a seasonal beach club card costing a couple of hundred euros to residential estates you cannot join at any price without buying a house. Visitors frequently assume the whole category is closed, which is wrong, and equally frequently assume a membership can be bought for a week, which is also wrong. The reality is more useful than either. Marbella's private clubs divide into beach clubs, golf and tennis clubs, hotel resident clubs and residential estates — and while the last cannot be joined without property there, almost every category admits guests of members, which is the practical route in. Our La Zagaleta post covers the closed end of the scale.
What Are the Four Categories of Club?
Beach clubs selling seasonal access, golf and tennis clubs with joining fees and dues, hotel clubs open to resort guests and residents, and residential estate clubs restricted to property owners and their guests. They work entirely differently.
What Each One Is
| Type | How you get in | Rough cost |
|---|---|---|
| Beach club | Buy a seasonal card | Hundreds per season |
| Golf / tennis | Joining fee plus annual dues | Thousands |
| Hotel resident club | Stay at the resort, or join locally | Varies |
| Residential estate | Own or rent property there | Not purchasable |
The Marbella Club began in 1954 as a genuinely private retreat, and the model of the members-only enclave has shaped this coast since.
The Distinction That Matters
The first three sell access; the fourth does not. Everything in Marbella marketed as "exclusive" is in one of the first three categories and is therefore available to anyone with the money. Genuine exclusivity here is residential — which is why estates like La Zagaleta occupy the position they do.
Beach Club Membership
The accessible end. A seasonal card typically buys priority booking, preferential bed rates and sometimes a guaranteed position — not access to a space closed to the public. Useful if you are here all summer.
What It Actually Buys
Priority when the beds are full, a better rate, and occasionally a reserved position on the front row. In August that priority is genuinely worth something, since peak-season beds go a week ahead. For a visitor here for a fortnight it rarely pays; for a summer resident it does.
As a Non-Member
Everything is bookable anyway. Beach clubs are commercial venues that sell memberships as a loyalty product rather than as a gate — anyone can reserve a bed. Our prices post covers what non-members pay, which is the great majority of people there.
Golf and Tennis Clubs
The genuine commitment category — joining fees plus annual dues, with waiting lists at the better clubs. Visitors play as green-fee guests almost everywhere except the private estate courses. Membership is for residents.
You Do Not Need to Join
The Nueva Andalucía golf valley holds three championship courses that take visitor bookings, and the coast has dozens more. A green fee gets you on. The exceptions are the private estate courses, which do not sell tee times at all. Our golf guide covers which is which.
Who Actually Joins
Residents and people who own property here. A joining fee plus annual dues only makes sense against regular play, and for a visitor playing three rounds a green fee is dramatically cheaper. Tennis works the same way — the Puente Romano tennis club takes non-member bookings.
Hotel and Resort Clubs
Resort spa, beach and sports clubs that admit hotel guests automatically and sell local memberships to residents. Staying at the resort is the simplest membership anyone can buy. The easiest route into the category.
Staying There Is Membership
Book a room at a Golden Mile resort and you have access to its beach club, spa, tennis and restaurants for the duration — which is a meaningful part of what those room rates buy. Our suites post covers what the top of that market includes.
Local Memberships
Most resorts sell spa and sports memberships to people living on the coast. For a resident it is a genuine value proposition; for a visitor it is irrelevant, since a stay includes the same access. Worth knowing if you spend part of the year here.
Residential Estate Clubs
The genuinely closed category. La Zagaleta and comparable estates restrict their golf, clubhouse and facilities to residents and their named guests, and there is no membership available separately at any price. Renting property is the only route.
There Is No Day Pass
Occasionally someone offers access to these estates. They cannot deliver it — the courses do not sell tee times to visitors and the gate does not admit anyone not on a resident's list. Our La Zagaleta post sets this out in detail, and the same applies at the other genuinely private estates.
Renting a Villa Is the Route
Several estate villas are available for weekly holiday rental, and renting one makes you, for that week, a resident with the access that implies. It is expensive and it is the only reliable way in. Our Zagaleta villa post covers how that works, including bookings on the estate.
The Guest Route, Which Is the Real Answer
Almost every category admits guests of members. If you know someone here, that is a more useful asset than any membership — and if you do not, the commercial versions of the same facilities are usually excellent. Two practical points.
Being Hosted
Golf clubs admit member guests, resort clubs admit guests of residents, and estates admit named guests at the gate. That covers essentially everything in Marbella that is not open commercially. If you are staying at an estate villa, your own guests — including a companion booking — are admitted the same way, arranged in advance.
And an Honest View
The commercial alternatives are genuinely good. The golf valley's public courses are excellent, the beach clubs are open to anyone, and a suite on the Golden Mile buys resort access outright. Marbella's exclusivity is mostly a residential phenomenon rather than something a visitor is excluded from. Our areas guide covers the whole coast on that basis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can visitors join private clubs in Marbella?
Beach clubs sell seasonal cards to anyone, golf and tennis clubs sell memberships with joining fees and dues, and resort clubs admit hotel guests automatically. Residential estate clubs cannot be joined at all without owning or renting property there.
What does beach club membership actually get you?
Priority booking when beds are full, a preferential rate, and sometimes a reserved front-row position — not access to a space closed to the public. Beach clubs are commercial venues and anyone can reserve a bed without membership.
Do I need to join a golf club to play in Marbella?
No. The Nueva Andalucía golf valley holds three championship courses that take visitor bookings, and the coast has dozens more. Only the private residential estate courses refuse green-fee play, and those cannot be accessed any other way.
Can I get access to La Zagaleta?
Only as a resident's named guest, or by renting a villa on the estate, which makes you a resident for that week. There are no day passes and no visitor tee times. Anyone offering to sell access is selling something that does not exist.
What is the easiest route into Marbella's club facilities?
Staying at a Golden Mile resort. A room booking includes the beach club, spa, tennis and restaurants for the duration — which is a meaningful part of what those rates buy, and is effectively the simplest membership anyone can purchase.
Staying Somewhere With Access?
Whether it is a resort, a golf club or a private estate, tell us the property and the gate or guest arrangement. Your companion is admitted like any other guest, and we handle the arrival details in advance.
