Key Takeaways:
  • SO/ Sotogrande is on Avenida Almenara in Sotogrande Alto, about 7 km west of Puerto Sotogrande in a straight line, not on the marina
  • It opened in 1999 as the Almenara, closed in late 2018 for a €30 million refit and reopened in July 2021 as Spain's first SO/ hotel
  • The spa covers 3,500 m²; there are three outdoor pools, one of them for adults, and The Alto Club's 18 holes start in the grounds
  • Cortijo Santa María 1962, the main restaurant, serves dinner Tuesday to Saturday only, 19:00 to 23:00
  • Sotogrande is outside Marbella, so a companion booking here is at least 2 hours, €600, plus her taxi of about 45 minutes

Clients who book SO/ Sotogrande from a photo of yachts tend to be surprised on arrival. The resort is not on the water. It sits up in Sotogrande Alto among low white buildings and lawns, with the marina a short drive east, and that changes how a stay here works. For the estate itself, the drive from Marbella and the quay, our page on Sotogrande escorts and the wider estate guide cover the ground; this is the hotel, room by room, written by a Marbella escorts agency whose clients often stay out west. SO/ Sotogrande is a five-star resort run by Accor's SO/ brand on Avenida Almenara, about 7 km inland and west of Puerto Sotogrande, with a 3,500 m² spa, three pools, The Alto Club golf course in its grounds and a dinner restaurant open Tuesday to Saturday.

Where Is SO/ Sotogrande, and Is It on the Marina?

No. The resort is on Avenida Almenara in Sotogrande Alto, the inland part of the estate, roughly 7 km west of Puerto Sotogrande as the crow flies. Gibraltar airport is 25 km away and Málaga airport 109 km, according to the hotel. Valderrama, La Reserva and the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande are all within about 4 km.

Sotogrande Alto, Not the Quay

The address is Avenida Almenara, in the San Roque municipality of Cádiz, and the hotel's own map pin puts it among the golf holes of Sotogrande Alto rather than by the sea. The rooms are spread through low buildings in landscaped gardens, with views south over the estate towards the Mediterranean and Gibraltar. Puerto Sotogrande is about ten minutes away by car and La Reserva roughly the same. Nothing about the estate is walkable at night, so plan on a car for every outing beyond the grounds. For the marina, the beach and the estate's four zones, our Sotogrande estate guide has the detail; we will not repeat it here.

From the Almenara to SO/

The land was the Cortijo de Santa María de la Higuera, one of six farms joined in the 1960s to make Sotogrande, and the farm's name survives in the hotel's main restaurant. A four-star hotel called the Almenara opened here in 1999 and later traded as NH Almenara. In late 2018 the estate's owners closed it for a two-year refit, put at €30 million by andalucia.com's history of the hotel, and it reopened in July 2021 under SO/, Accor's design-led brand, run with Ennismore. It was the first SO/ in Spain. The Spanish swimwear designer Dolores Cortés worked on the interiors, uniforms and art.

The Rooms and Suites: Which Category to Book

Entry rooms start at 36 m² and the two VIP suites reach 233 and 258 m². For two people we suggest the 48 m² SO Studio, which adds a sitting area and a terrace for a modest step up. Ask for a garden-facing building away from the family pool, and avoid the family categories, which are designed around children.

The Categories Side by Side

CategorySizeLayoutWho it suits
SO Cosy36 m²King bed, garden or patio view, most with a balconyA short stay, mostly out of the room
SO Comfy King40 m²King bed, most with a terraceThe sensible default for two
SO Studio48 m²King bed, sitting area, terraceOur pick for a couple
SO Lofty67 m²King bed, living room, bay window, signature bathA long weekend with evenings in
SO Suite93 m²King bed, lounge, terraceDinner served in the room
SO VIP Almenara / El Cortijo233 – 258 m²Two bedrooms, salon, large terraceGroups, or a stay that needs space

Sizes are as Accor lists them in 2026. The family categories (Comfy Family, Together Room, SO Two) sit between these and are aimed at children, not couples.

Our Pick, and What to Ask When Booking

The Studio is the room we steer couples towards: 48 m², a proper place to sit that is not the bed, and a terrace for breakfast. The Lofty, at 67 m², is worth it for three nights or more, when the bay window and the bath start to earn their price. Sources do not agree on the total number of rooms; the 2020 announcement said 151 including 24 suites, later listings give a little more. What matters more is position. When you book, ask for a building on the quiet side of the gardens and say you would rather not be by the family pool or the kids' club; the hotel takes families seriously, and in July and August it shows.

The 3,500 m² Spa, the Three Pools and the Gym

The hotel calls its spa Sotogrande Spa & Wellness: 3,500 m² of thalasso-inspired treatments, thermal pools and hydrotherapy, with a wellbeing centre that adds an indoor pool, cryotherapy, steam rooms and a hammam. Outside there are three heated pools, one for families, one infinity pool and one for adults only.

Thalasso Treatments and the Wellbeing Centre

At 3,500 m², according to the hotel's own site, this is one of the largest hotel spas on the coast, and it is the main reason to stay in October and November, when the evenings cool and the pools empty. The treatments lean on seawater and hydrotherapy; the wellbeing centre adds cryotherapy and a hammam. There are two gyms, one looking out to the Mediterranean, and the hotel says the gym is open around the clock. Book treatments when you book the room in late summer; outside the season a same-day slot is usually possible, but the late-afternoon times go first.

Which Pool to Use

The three outdoor pools are a family pool, an infinity pool and an adults' pool, and choosing the right one decides the afternoon. The family pool sits by the Rocío Garden café and the SO/ Kids Club, which is included with every stay, so in school holidays it is loud by eleven. The adults' pool is where couples end up, and the infinity pool is the one for photographs. In our experience the adults' pool after 16:00, once the day guests have gone, is the calmest place in the resort.

Cortijo Santa María 1962 and the Other Tables

Cortijo Santa María 1962 is the dinner restaurant, with seasonal tasting menus designed by the Michelin-starred chef Nicolas Isnard and served Tuesday to Saturday from 19:00 to 23:00. Society Clubhouse covers breakfast and lunch, IXO has live flamenco and Spanish guitar in the courtyard, MARXA grills over wood, and Rocío Garden serves the family pool.

The Cortijo: Three, Five or Seven Courses

The Cortijo offers its Bistronomy menu in three formats, three, five or seven courses, plus an à la carte, and a meal can open with an olive oil tasting. The cooking is Andalusian with outside influences, and the menu changes with the seasons: this summer brought a tuna menu from 15 July to 13 September, and a new Bistronomy menu arrived in October. The Michelin star is the chef's own rather than one awarded to this dining room, which is worth knowing before you plan an anniversary around it. Ask for the terrace. Every season someone books the Cortijo for a Sunday or Monday, the two nights it is closed.

Society, IXO and MARXA, Night by Night

On the Cortijo's two closed nights the hotel still feeds you well. Society Clubhouse, with indoor and terrace tables over the golf course and the sea, is the casual all-day room. MARXA, the hotel's chiringuito, is built around a wood-fired grill and adds DJ sessions. IXO, in the courtyard the hotel calls the Plaza Andaluza, serves tapas and cocktails with live flamenco and Spanish guitar, and it is the right last stop on any night. Breakfast is served à la carte rather than as a buffet, which keeps the morning room quiet.

Golf at The Alto Club, Inside the Grounds

The Alto Club is the 18-hole course in the hotel grounds, formerly Almenara Golf: a Dave Thomas design later reworked by Manuel Piñero and relaunched in 2025 with four sets of tees. Its academy, led by former Solheim Cup captain Suzann Pettersen, has a nine-hole par-3 course called Alcornoques, Toptracer bays and night practice. Valderrama, La Reserva and the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande are all within about 4 km.

The Course, the Academy and the Packages

The old 27-hole Almenara layout became an 18-hole course, the Alcornoques par-3 nine and the academy. Golf Today's report on the hotel's 2026 award describes the course as relaunched in 2025, with covered and open range bays. The hotel sells it through stay-and-play packages and three memberships, from a 50% green-fee discount to unlimited golf with a buggy. Third-party booking sites list a visitor round at roughly €100 to €125 for 18 holes in 2026; the hotel does not publish a fee, so ask at booking. For the casual golfer this course is the point of staying here: tee off at 09:00 from the room, lunch at Society at 13:30.

Valderrama and the Courses Within 4 km

Most of the golfers we look after here come for the neighbours. Valderrama is a few minutes away and takes visitors only in a short midday window at €600 a round in 2026; our Valderrama visitor's guide covers the rules and the forecaddie. La Reserva, a Cabell B. Robinson design, is about ten minutes' drive, and the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, the estate's first course, is close by too. Golf Today notes that all three sit in Golf Digest's 2026 Spanish top six, which makes SO/ the obvious bed for a golf week on this side of the coast.

What Does a Stay at SO/ Sotogrande Cost, and When Is It Best?

SO/ does not publish a rate card; prices move with the dates, and summer weekends during the polo season, from 19 May to 13 September in 2026, are the dearest. October and November are the best value for golf and the spa. Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out by 12:00, and pets are accepted.

Rates, Packages and the 2026 Award

Treat any single price you see online as a snapshot. A booking-site listing for one June night showed the entry room at around $373, and a golf reseller sells three nights' bed and breakfast with two rounds from £396 a person; both move by the week. What changed this autumn is visibility: on 7 October 2026 Condé Nast Traveller's Readers' Choice Awards, based on more than 296,000 responses from UK readers, ranked the resort sixth among the best resorts in the rest of Europe, according to Golf Today. Expect next summer's rates to reflect it.

SO/, Finca Cortesín or Hacienda del Mar?

Three five-star resorts sit within half an hour of each other west of Marbella, and they suit different stays. SO/ is the golf and family resort with the biggest spa. Finca Cortesín, in Casares about 15 km east of the marina, is the quieter one, with its own course, and our Finca Cortesín guide covers it. Hacienda del Mar, the former Kempinski on the beach at Estepona, is the choice for sand at the door, as our Hacienda del Mar review explains. For a couple without golf clubs, the other two usually win; with them, SO/ does.

A Visitor at SO/ Sotogrande: How We Arrange It

Visitors come and go all evening here, with restaurants and a bar used by non-residents, so one more at reception draws no attention. Sotogrande is outside Marbella, so the minimum is two hours, €600, plus her taxi of about 45 minutes, which we price into the quote. Dinner dates and overnights suit the distance best.

Arrival, and Why the Evening Starts at IXO

The simplest evening here begins in public: she arrives by taxi, you meet at IXO for a drink while the guitarist plays, then dinner at the Cortijo or Society, then the walk back through the gardens to your building. Give us the room's building rather than a room number, and the dinner booking if you have one. Because the drive from Marbella is long, we confirm her arrival time before she leaves, not after. For a dinner date on a Tuesday to Saturday, book the Cortijo table first and send us the time.

The Two-Hour Rule, Her Taxi and Changing Plans

Two hours here costs €600; a dinner date, at least three hours, starts at €900; an overnight runs €3,000 to €4,000, and out here it is often the better buy, since nobody drives back to Marbella at two in the morning. Her taxi is the one addition, quoted up front; there is no weekend or polo-season surcharge. Her fee changes hands when she arrives, as cash, a transfer or crypto (cards are not taken); book days ahead and a quarter of it is paid in advance. For the full rate card, see what a booking costs, how payment works and our cancellation guide, which gives a dinner date 24 hours and an overnight 48 hours to change free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SO/ Sotogrande on the beach or the marina?

Neither. It stands on Avenida Almenara in Sotogrande Alto, the inland part of the estate, with views over the gardens and golf towards the sea. Puerto Sotogrande is roughly ten minutes away by car and the nearest beaches are a short drive, so plan on a taxi or a driver for every outing.

Who owns and runs SO/ Sotogrande?

It is run under SO/, Accor's design-led luxury brand, in partnership with Ennismore, on behalf of the estate's owners. The hotel opened in 1999 as the Almenara, later traded as NH Almenara, and reopened as SO/ Sotogrande in July 2021 after a refit of about €30 million.

When is the Cortijo Santa María 1962 restaurant open?

Tuesday to Saturday, from 19:00 to 23:00, for dinner only. It serves seasonal tasting menus of three, five or seven courses designed by the chef Nicolas Isnard, plus an à la carte. On Sundays and Mondays eat at Society Clubhouse or MARXA, or go down to the marina for dinner.

Can you play golf at SO/ Sotogrande without staying there?

Yes. The Alto Club, the 18-hole course in the grounds, takes outside players through its online booking system, and third-party sites list 2026 rounds at roughly €100 to €125. The hotel also sells memberships and stay-and-play packages, and its academy has a nine-hole par-3 course for shorter sessions.
