Everything here is timed by the sun, so check it first. By our calculation for Marbella, the sun sets at about 18:06 in mid-December, 18:58 on Valentine's Day, 20:53 in mid-April after the clocks change, 21:39 in mid-June and 20:29 in mid-September, and rises between about 07:01 in June and 08:31 in January. On the last Sunday of October sunset jumps an hour earlier overnight, which catches out anyone who booked a 19:00 sail for the week after. Book anything on the water by that time, not by habit.

Morning: The Paseo at Sunrise and the Sea Before the Wind

Start early. At sunrise the Paseo Marítimo is at its quietest, and the sea is usually at its calmest before the afternoon breeze arrives. A walk along the seafront or an hour on paddleboards, followed by a slow breakfast, sets the pace for the day without costing much.

A Sunrise Walk by the Lighthouse

The seafront promenade runs past Marbella's lighthouse by Playa del Faro, and the old town is five minutes' walk inland. In June the sun is up by about 07:01, so a walk at 07:30 is cool and quiet; in January it rises at about 08:31 and the walk can wait until after coffee. Walk west towards the Golden Mile and you have the light behind you and the mountains ahead. Then a slow breakfast, before the beach fills.

Two Paddleboards, or One Kayak

A morning on the water is the cheapest romantic hour in Marbella. Unguided board hire costs €25 an hour at Marbella JetSki, as our paddleboarding guide lists for 2026, and NaluSur's guided two-hour routes from the town marina, from €39 a person, can be done in a shared double kayak. Book the first slot of the day: the sea breeze usually builds after midday, and paddling against it is work rather than romance. Bring a dry bag for the phone.

Midday: A Vineyard Picnic Above Ronda

For a picnic with a view, drive about 75 minutes inland to Cortijo Los Aguilares, a wine estate in the Serranía de Ronda whose summer picnic, Entre Viñedos y Encinas, costs €80 a person in 2026. It runs on weekdays, by booking only, with the estate's own wines and the mountains around you.

The estate sells the picnic as an experience, Entre Viñedos y Encinas, between the vines and the holm oaks, at €80 a person, and lists a winter version for the colder months. It opens from Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 17:00, with Saturday mornings on request for groups of four or more, and closes on Sundays and public holidays. The Drive and the Day

The road from Marbella to Ronda climbs through the Serranía in about 75 minutes, with bends that are better for the passenger than the driver, so hire a driver if you plan to drink the wine. Leave Marbella by 10:00, picnic at midday, and you are back on the coast for a late afternoon at the spa or the beach. In summer the hills are several degrees cooler than the coast, which is half the point. In winter, take a jacket: the vineyards sit high above the sea.

Afternoon: A Spa for Two at Puente Romano

The Six Senses spa at Puente Romano takes outside guests at published prices. An hour in the wet zone costs €90 each, or €180 for four hours, and it opens from 11:00 to 19:30. Add treatments booked at the same time if you want them together.

The Wet Zone

The Six Senses spa has a hydrotherapy pool, a cold plunge, heat-and-ice experience showers, a herbal steam room, a sauna and a hammam, with a relaxation lounge overlooking the Mediterranean. Hotel guests pay €75 for an hour in the wet zone and €150 for a half day; outside guests pay €90 and €180, subject to availability. Treatments Side by Side

The spa has six treatment rooms on the ground floor and three on the first floor overlooking the sea. For two, book both treatments for the same time and ask for neighbouring rooms when you book. On the current menu the 24K Gold facial costs from €245 for 50 minutes, and the Signature Hammam, with a scalp ritual, homemade-soap exfoliation and a loofah scrub, costs from €315 for 50 minutes. Book an hour in the wet zone for the same afternoon, and the treatments become a half-day.

A Carriage Ride in Mijas Pueblo

For a horse-drawn carriage, drive to Mijas Pueblo, about 35 minutes east in the hills, where 8 calesas work alongside the famous donkey taxis. A calesa ride costs €25, a donkey cart for two €20, and the rank runs daily from 10:00 to 21:00 in summer and 09:00 to 18:00 in winter.

According to Mijas tourism, the town hall has built a stand for its 60 donkey taxis and 8 carriages, which began in the early 1960s when villagers riding home on their donkeys found visitors paying to be photographed with them, then to ride. The calesa, at €25, is the romantic choice; the donkey cart for two, at €20, is the funny one. There is no booking: you join the rank.

Making an Afternoon of It

Go in the late afternoon, when the white village turns gold: in summer the carriages run until 21:00, about 40 minutes before sunset in mid-July. After the ride, walk to one of the viewpoints that look down over Fuengirola to the sea. In winter the rank works from 09:00 to 18:00, so go straight after lunch. Sunset: On the Water or on the Dunes

Two settings beat everything else. On the water, a private two-hour sail costs €349 to €750 for the boat, timed so the sun sets while you are out. On land, the boardwalks over the Artola dunes at Cabopino are free, protected and nearly empty at dusk. Choose by the wind: if it blows, take the dunes.

The Artola Dunes

At the eastern edge of the municipality, behind the beach at Cabopino, the Artola dunes are a protected natural monument crossed by wooden boardwalks, with a watchtower at the far end and very few people at dusk. It costs nothing and needs no booking, which makes it the best last-minute plan on the coast, about twenty minutes east of Marbella town by car. Night: The Old Town, Dinner and the Villa

After sunset, keep it on foot. The old town's whitewashed lanes and Plaza de los Naranjos are at their best late in the evening, under the street lamps. Have dinner before or after, or skip restaurants altogether with a private chef at the villa, which is the most private evening on the coast.

The Old Town After Dark

Walk from Plaza de los Naranjos up through the Barrio Alto, where the lanes are quietest and the bougainvillea hangs over the walls, and back down to the Alameda park and the sea, about an hour at a slow pace. Or Stay In

For a couple, the most romantic dinner on the coast is the one nobody else is at. A private chef cooks at the villa, the table goes on the terrace and the evening ends without a taxi. Practical Notes

Book the spa in both names and the sail by the sunset time; leave the carriage and the dunes unbooked.
