There is a structural problem with the Marbella evening that nobody warns visitors about: dinner is at ten, and you probably want to leave the hotel at eight. That two-hour gap is where most people either sit in a hotel bar or start drinking too early somewhere with no view. It is also, handled properly, the best hour of the whole night — the temperature drops, the light goes gold over the water, and a cocktail on a roof costs a fifth of what the same drink will cost at two in the morning. The Two-Hour Gap Nobody Plans For
Spanish dinner starts at nine or ten, and visitors are ready to go out at seven or eight. That gap is where a Marbella evening is made or wasted, and a rooftop is the correct answer to it. It is a structural feature of the coast.
Why the Gap Exists
Spain eats late — nine is early and ten is normal on this coast in summer. Northern European visitors arrive with a seven-o'clock body clock and spend the difference badly. Spanish dinner hours run around three hours later than northern European ones across Andalusia, which is what creates the early-evening gap.
It Is the Best Value Hour of the Night
A €20 cocktail on a terrace at sunset against a €25 drink in a crowded club at three in the morning is not a close comparison on any measure. When to Go
Between 8pm and 10pm, timed so that sunset falls in the middle of it. In July that means arriving around half past eight; in October, closer to seven. Sunset does the work.

Not Before Seven
Rooftops in July at six in the evening are still in full sun and genuinely unpleasant. The terraces that face west are the worst for this. Wait until the sun is low — an hour makes the difference between a terrace you want to sit on and one you want to leave.
Which View Is Worth Paying For
Two orientations matter in Marbella: west over the water for the sunset itself, and north toward La Concha, the 1,215-metre peak behind the town, which turns pink as the light goes. The second is the better photograph. Choose by what you want to look at.
West Over the Water
The sunset itself, over the sea and toward Gibraltar, with the coastline curving away. Best from the Golden Mile and Puerto Banús terraces. On a clear evening the Rif mountains of Morocco are visible on the horizon, which surprises people every time.
North to La Concha
The mountain behind Marbella catches the last light and goes properly pink for about ten minutes. Terraces in the town and on the eastern Golden Mile have the angle. It is the more distinctive view and considerably less photographed than the sea — our photography post covers where to catch it.
Over the Marina

The Golden Mile

Puerto Banús
Terraces above the marina, busier and louder, and the right choice if the night is heading into the port afterwards. They fill early on summer weekends and several take reservations, which is worth using in August.
Marbella Town
Smaller, less expensive, and with the La Concha angle. They pair naturally with dinner in the old town, which is fifteen minutes and forty percent cheaper than the marina — a combination we recommend more often than any other in Marbella.
