It Is Early by Spanish Standards

The Practical Things Nobody Mentions

Sea breeze after dark is cooler than the day suggests in any month, sand and heels do not work, and the good tables — the front row on the sand — go first and are worth requesting specifically. Three small things.

Bring Something Warm

Even in August. The breeze off the water after nine drops the temperature noticeably and a terrace on open sand has nothing blocking it. A jacket or a wrap turns a slightly uncomfortable second hour into a comfortable one, and almost nobody brings one on their first beachfront evening.

Shoes

Sand and heels are incompatible, and most beachfront restaurants have a stretch of it between the entrance and the table. Flats or block heels. Request the Front Row

Beachfront restaurants have tables on the sand and tables set back, and the difference is the entire reason you booked. Ask specifically when you reserve, and book far enough ahead that the request is possible — in August the front row goes a week out.

Standard practice on this coast and entirely legitimate — the menu lists a price per kilo and the fish is weighed and shown to you. It is also where bills surprise people, because a large sea bass is a large bill. Ask what the fish weighs before agreeing to it; nobody finds the question rude.

Where the Value Is
