- El Fuerte opened on 4 July 1957 beside the ruins of the Fuerte de San Luis, a fort Charles V ordered in 1554, and the Luque family still owns it
- A refit costing €31 million reopened it as a five-star in 2023, with 266 rooms, 78 of them in the Selected tier with a private lounge
- Dining is Le Marché for breakfast, Levante for dinner and Soleo on the beach; the rooftop Edge by Paco Pérez was missing from the 2026 season announcement, so check before you plan around it
- It is a seasonal hotel: the 2026 season opened on 6 March, standard doubles started at €390 with breakfast, and the closing date is not published
- It sits inside Marbella municipality, about eight minutes' walk from the Plaza de los Naranjos, so a companion booking here follows the 1-hour minimum at €300
Ask a Marbella taxi driver for El Fuerte and nobody asks which one. The white block at the bottom of Avenida del Mar has been the town's hotel since 1957, and for most of our clients it is the only five-star from which dinner in the old town needs no car at all. That is why it comes up so often when people book escorts in Marbella for an evening in the centre, and why the team behind Marbella escorts keeps an up-to-date view of it. El Fuerte Marbella is a family-owned five-star hotel on the seafront at the edge of Marbella's old town, opened in 1957 and reopened in 2023 after a €31 million refit, with 266 rooms and a seasonal calendar that starts in March.
What Is Hotel El Fuerte Marbella?
El Fuerte Marbella is a five-star seafront hotel at the southern edge of Marbella's old town, built beside the remains of the 16th-century Fuerte de San Luis. José Luque Manzano opened it on 4 July 1957. His family still owns it through Fuerte Group Hotels, and it joined Historic Hotels Worldwide in 2025. Its address is Calle El Fuerte, 29602 Marbella.
A 1554 Fort and a 1957 Hotel
The name is literal. Charles V ordered a bastioned fort here in 1554 to protect Marbella from Barbary pirates, and by the start of the 20th century most of it had collapsed. José Luque Manzano, a businessman from Estepa in Seville province who owned a chocolate factory and an oil mill, bought the land in 1954 and opened the hotel on 4 July 1957, according to the Historic Hotels Worldwide history of El Fuerte. Walt Disney stayed a few weeks after the opening, and Diana Dors stayed while filming Scent of Mystery, released in 1960. Remains of the fort survive on the site, and the hotel uses them as its story.
The Luque Family and Fuerte Group Hotels
Luque later added the east and west wings, taking the hotel past 200 rooms. After his death in 1984 his children took over and built Fuerte Group Hotels around it: family hotels under the Fuerte name, the adults-only Amàre brand, Olée holiday apartments and El Fuerte as the single five-star. The ownership shows in small ways. The olive oil on the tables comes from the family, and the hotel sells its history rather than hiding it. Few hotels on this coast are still run by the family of the man who built them.
The Old Town on the Doorstep
The hotel faces the sea, with the promenade and beach in front, and the old town starts a few minutes uphill behind it. That position is the whole argument for staying here: up Avenida del Mar past the Dalí bronzes and the Alameda to the Plaza de los Naranjos, and back down at midnight, without crossing a main road. Our old town walking route starts almost at the hotel's door, so we will not repeat it here.
The 2023 Refit: What €31 Million Changed
Fuerte Group spent €31 million turning the four-star El Fuerte into a five-star: about €14 million on building work, €10 million on equipment and €7 million on licences, fees and opening costs. The hotel reopened in 2023 with 266 rooms, interiors by the Chilean designer Jaime Beriestain and a new rooftop restaurant. The reported length of the works runs from 16 to 18 months.
Beriestain's Interiors: Clay, Cane and Ceramic
Jaime Beriestain's studio kept the original pillars and the arched doorways and replaced almost everything around them. The palette is terracotta, golden brown and green, with stone and clay floors, hand-painted washed ceramic tiles, carved wood, wicker and cane furniture and marble tables, much of it made by Andalusian craftsmen. The effect is a resort hotel that feels Andalusian without the reproduction-hacienda look of the 1990s builds further west. The rooms followed the same line: green and black marble bathrooms, freestanding tubs in the better categories and balconies with daybeds in the Selected sea-view rooms.
Where the Money Went
The breakdown comes from the Hosteltur report on the reopening, published in May 2023. Early plans spoke of 251 rooms and a March 2023 opening; the hotel came back with 266 rooms in late spring. Our review of every five-star hotel in Marbella sets the result against the other nine in the municipality: El Fuerte is the only five-star in the town centre, and the refit priced it alongside ME Marbella rather than the Golden Mile names.
Which Room Should You Book at El Fuerte?
Book a sea-facing room. Of the 266 rooms, 78 belong to the Selected tier, which adds a private lounge with drinks and snacks from 11:00 to 21:00, breakfast in a separate area of Le Marché and daily spa hydrotherapy. The 2026 season opened with standard doubles from €390 a night, breakfast for two included. Ask for a front sea view from the third floor up: the promenade below stays busy until late.
Standard, Selected and Selected With Lounge
| Tier | What you get | Published price |
|---|---|---|
| Standard double | Breakfast at Le Marché; view depends on the room | From €390 a night with breakfast for two (2026 season) |
| Selected | Private lounge 11:00 – 21:00, Selected breakfast area, daily hydrotherapy at the spa | Not published for 2026 |
| Selected front sea view with lounge | Separate sitting area, freestanding bath, balcony with daybed | From €630 a night in a 2023 review |
The hotel does not publish a full rate card, so treat the table as a floor, not a quote. Our own five-star review gave a band of €302 to €764 across the season.
Is Selected Worth Paying For?
For two nights or more, usually yes. The lounge covers pre-dinner drinks without a bar bill, the separate breakfast area avoids the buffet crowd a 266-room hotel produces in August, and the daily hydrotherapy is worth having. For a single night, when you will be out at dinner and back late, a standard sea-view room does the job. In July and August families fill the hotel and the pool terraces get loud by noon, and the Selected areas are where the quiet is; in May, June or September the gap narrows.
Le Marché, Levante, Soleo and the Rooftop
Le Marché serves the breakfast buffet with a terrace over the beach. Levante does Mediterranean cooking with an Andalusian accent and works best for dinner. Soleo is the beach club restaurant on the sand. Edge by Paco Pérez opened on the roof in 2023, but the hotel's 2026 season announcement did not list it. Ask the concierge whether the rooftop is serving before you count on it.
Levante for the First Night
Levante is the evening restaurant, with indoor and outdoor tables and a menu built on Andalusian produce with dishes from further afield. The red prawn rice is the order, made for a minimum of two, so it suits a dinner for two. It is the right choice for the night you arrive, when you do not want to plan anything. Le Marché lays on a large Mediterranean breakfast buffet; the Selected area inside it is the calmer table, and a Grab and Go counter with an honesty payment machine serves early starts.
Soleo on the Sand, and the Rooftop Question
Soleo is the beach restaurant in front of the hotel, and we covered its menu and its winter closure in our guide to Playa de la Venus, the beach it stands on. The open question in 2026 is the roof. Edge by Paco Pérez, a tasting-menu restaurant with sea and mountain views run by the Catalan chef, was the headline of the 2023 reopening, and the rooftop has an infinity pool. A 2024 booking notice described the rooftop restaurant and pool as seasonally closed, and the 2026 season press material lists the infinity pool but not Edge.
Leaving the Hotel for Dinner
This is the one five-star where eating out costs nothing in transport. The old town's tapas bars are eight to ten minutes uphill, and the two-Michelin-star Skina is in the same streets. For a first evening we send clients to the counters in our old town tapas guide, then a proper restaurant on night two. Old-town dining rooms are small, so book the 21:30 Saturday table days ahead.
Spa by Clarins, the Pools and the Beach in Front
The spa is underground and run with Clarins: a low-lit hydrotherapy pool, a sauna, a steam room, six treatment rooms and a gym. Outside are two pools in the gardens, one of them adults-only, an outdoor hot tub and the rooftop infinity pool. The promenade and the beach sit directly in front of the hotel. Selected guests get a hydrotherapy session a day included.
The Clarins Spa
Six treatment rooms for 266 bedrooms is not many, so book treatments when you check in rather than on the afternoon you want one. The hydrotherapy pool is warm and tiled in forest green, and it is the part of the hotel that keeps working on a grey day in late October. The hotel does not advertise day passes, so assume the spa is for residents. The gym is small; the promenade outside is the better place for a morning run.
Two Pools, One Adults-Only, and the Children Question
El Fuerte is not an adults-only hotel. The Olive Club takes children aged 4 to 12 in July and August, and the main garden pool is where families settle; the second garden pool is reserved for adults. If you want no children anywhere in the building, the same group's Amàre Beach Hotel, also on the central seafront, admits guests only from 16. Outside those two months, El Fuerte's guests are mostly couples and older Spanish and British regulars.
Where Is El Fuerte, and When Is It Open?
El Fuerte stands on the seafront at the bottom of Avenida del Mar, about eight minutes' walk from the Plaza de los Naranjos, 4 km from the Golden Mile hotels and 8 km from Puerto Banús. It is a seasonal hotel: the 2026 season began on 6 March, and the hotel does not publish its closing date. The hotel hires bicycles at reception for the promenade.
From the Hotel Door
| Destination | Distance | How and how long |
|---|---|---|
| Plaza de los Naranjos | about 600 m | On foot, 8 – 10 min |
| Golden Mile hotels | about 4 km | Taxi, about 10 min |
| Puerto Banús | about 8 km | Taxi, 15 – 20 min |
| Málaga airport | about 55 km | Car, 45 – 50 min |
Puerto Banús is reachable on foot or by bicycle along the promenade, but at about 8 km it is a commitment rather than a stroll. A taxi is the realistic option at night.
A Seasonal Five-Star
The hotel reopened for 2026 on 6 March, as it did on 9 March in 2024, which tells you it closes for part of the winter. It does not publish the date it shuts, and some facilities close earlier: Soleo has a winter break, and the rooftop has had seasonal closures. Mid-October is usually a good time to stay, with the hotel open and the August crowd gone. From November, ask the hotel directly before you book flights.
Getting There From the Airport
Málaga airport, about 50 minutes east, is the usual way in; it saw 26.76 million passengers in 2025, according to Aena. Book a car before you land; our airport transfer guide compares it with taxis and coaches. The car drops you at the front door on Calle El Fuerte; the hotel's own car park is on the same street, and the underground car park beneath Avenida del Mar is the overflow if you have hired a car.
Booking a Marbella Escort at El Fuerte
El Fuerte is a large city-style hotel with a staffed lobby, lifts and a night desk that sees guests come and go until late. It is inside Marbella municipality, so the normal 1-hour minimum at €300 applies, she usually arrives 25 to 30 minutes after confirmation, and you pay her taxi. Tell us the hotel name when you book.
How the Arrival Works Here
A guest receiving a visitor is unremarkable in a 266-room hotel, and El Fuerte's lobby stays busy until late with guests walking back from the old town. Send us the hotel name and the time; the room number can wait until she is on her way. The simplest evening starts outside: a drink in the old town, dinner, then the walk back down together. If reception asks a late visitor for ID, that is house policy. Our hotel arrival guide explains why Spanish hotels register guests who stay overnight, not visitors who come and go.
What It Costs in the Centre
One hour is €300 and two hours €600. A dinner date is booked for three hours or longer, from €900, and El Fuerte is the hotel where that format works best because the restaurant, the walk and the room are all within ten minutes of each other. An overnight runs €3,000 to €4,000; the companion and the hours set where in that range it falls. From most of town her taxi to El Fuerte is a few minutes; only a dawn start makes it dearer, and we would say so up front. There is no weekend or summer premium.
Payment, Deposit and Changes
You settle with her when she arrives, in cash, by transfer or in crypto; cards are not an option. Book days ahead and we take 25% up front; book tonight and there is no deposit at all; our page on how payment works has the detail. An hourly booking can be changed free until two hours before, a dinner date until 24 hours before and an overnight until 48 hours before; our cancellation guide covers the rest. The WhatsApp chat is deleted after 30 days; we keep no client list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is El Fuerte Marbella a five-star hotel?
Yes. El Fuerte traded as a four-star for decades and reopened as a five-star in 2023 after a refit that cost €31 million. It is the only five-star hotel in Marbella town centre, on the seafront below the old town, and it joined Historic Hotels Worldwide in 2025.
Is El Fuerte Marbella open in winter?
Not all year. The hotel works a season: it reopened for 2026 on 6 March and in 2024 on 9 March. It does not publish the date it closes, and the beach restaurant and rooftop close earlier, so check directly before booking a stay from November onwards.
Is El Fuerte Marbella adults-only?
No. Families stay, and the Olive Club takes children aged 4 to 12 in July and August. One of the two garden pools is reserved for adults. The same owners run Amàre Beach Hotel on the central seafront, which only admits guests aged 16 and over.
How far is El Fuerte from Marbella old town and Puerto Banús?
The Plaza de los Naranjos is about 600 metres away, eight to ten minutes on foot up Avenida del Mar. Puerto Banús is about 8 km west, 15 to 20 minutes by taxi, and the Golden Mile hotels are about 10 minutes away. Málaga airport is roughly 45 to 50 minutes by car.
